LCRP release says 200 volunteers are needed to “take back Lucas County from the Democrats”

06 Jul 2010

The following was received via e-mail from the Lucas County Republican Party, it’s an interesting position when compared to the Blade article (link) where Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop states, “In all honesty, it’s not a Republican document, it’s not a Democratic document; it’s a good-government document.” I think it’s important for Democrats to know what the planned motivation behind this is before they sign:

Help take back Lucas County from the Democrats

Do you believe we need to take back control of our county government from the democrats and save tax dollars by eliminating duplication and waste? If so, we need your help to reform our county government now!

We need 200 volunteers to help us collect enough signatures to get the Lucas County Charter initiative on the November ballot.
Here are a few highlights of the County Charter Reform initiative:

One elected county executive instead of three commissioners and an 11-member Council elected from fairly-drawn districts that represent all communities.
– Provides separation of powers, checks and balances and public debate on important issues.
– Provides more opportunities for diverse communities to be represented.
– Gives Council the power to initiate legislation, approve budgets and serve as a financial watchdog.

The elimination of all currently elected county positions, except the Prosecutor and Judges.
– Ensures that the law enforcement branch, including the courts, will be fully independent, accountable to the people.
– The currently elected positions of Treasurer, Recorder and Auditor will be consolidated under the offices of Treasurer and Fiscal Officer in the executive branch.
– It will take the politics out of the Coroner, Sheriff and Engineer positions by no longer having them as elected officers.

An advisory Economic Development Commission, with members appointed by the county Executive, city, suburbs, business and labor.
– Will assist the Executive and Council in crafting a vision, plan and strategy for countywide job creation and transformational economic development.
– Ensure regional collaboration on major economic development projects by bringing a regional perspective to all major projects.

Central Human Resources Department that will:
– Ensure ethical, fair, professional standards in hiring, evaluation and promotion.
Charter Reform will provide Lucas County with an updated, much more efficient government that is better able to compete for jobs and make our county more attractive to residents, employers and families.

So if there are 200 volunteers that say they will start working tomorrow at 9:00 AM. The formula (see link)changes to…

X = 21,433 signatures need to be collected
Y = 200 if there are actually 200 people working
Z = 107.165 which can be rounded to 107 per person

With a due date of Monday July 26th, there are a remaining 246 hours as of 2:00 PM EST. (remember there were 249 at 11:00 AM. minus 3 ‘good’ hours.)

    So Z (107) devided by 249 = .042 signatures needed every hour.

That would be a very legitimate number to actually achive this goal by July 26th, however…

If the deadline is July 15th as previously stated, the actual number of ‘good’ hours remaining until 5:00 PM are 86 hours. This still entertains the idea that Z (107) devided by 86 hours means gathering signatures at a rate of 1.24418 per hour, which means 5 signatures every 4 hours. If we extend the deadline another 12 hours until 5:00 PM Friday, July 16th, for a total of 98 hours, the number closes to a fraction of one signature an hour, a fairly realistic number that I feel any reader of this blog could achieve.

SO WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN????

The conclusion I draw is that if Chairman Stainbrook can get his 200 volunteers together to achieve his goal, he is the uniter he has claimed to be.

However if he cannot gather the 200 bodies needed, and cannot get something as simple as one signature an hour, which I contend anyone reading this page can do, then he has shown his ineffectiveness.

I would like to see the 200 volunteers show up, and the chips fall where they may.

If the ‘lapdog’ connection between Chairman Stainbrook and the Block’s is as close as often stated, this may be an incident where someone gets swatted on the nose with a newspaper.

I could be interested in this proposal but I need a lot more information than is available now.

Marty I once failed at getting one valid signature per hour – granted it was cold outside and no one wanted to open their doors, but…I failed.

If he would have been “challenged” earlier by the Blade editorial staff and had started earlier, he would have stood a better chance. How many additional volunteers he gets remains to be seen but if he does pull this off and manages to get it on the ballot? He will deserve some credit. No matter how I personally feel about this particular charter change.

FOLKS, WE NOT ONLY HAVE GOOD GOVERNMENT WE HAVE OUTSTANDING GOVERNMENT IN LUCAS COUNTY. THIS CHARTER ISSUE IS FULL OF HOLES AND MUST BE DEFEATED IN A LANDSLIDE, IF IT MAKES IT TO THE BALLOT….I FOR ONE HAVE BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO WORK MY HEART OUT FOR ITS DEFEAT….

These last minute ballot initiatives should get as much attention from us as it looks like they put into doing them. I say we wait till the last minute to sign then only sign our middle names, street name, and zip codes. We will fill in the rest of the details later, just like them.

I’m not putting money on this one either way, though the recent announcement by LCRP that it is now a Republican idea, isn’t going to help the cause. If it was a bi-partisian issue, with Ben Konop, Keith Wilkowski, Pete Ujuvagi, Rob Ludeman, George Sarantou, all of the unions, and Carty supporting it, there is a good chance it could get on the ballot in 10 days, leading to…

Michael #4: I was very much against the casino project which I thought would short Toledo on funds, with more money flowing to the other 3 cities, however I signed a petition to allow it on the ballot.

I have no problem with this proposal going onto the ballot, as (like most first time proposals) it would not be very likely to pass as it is currently written.

Marty, I’ve taken the position in the past that if a group wants to get signatures, that is their right and if they make it? Then it’s up to the voters to decide. I’m not a fan of working against a signature process but I do think people should be aware of the motivation of a group since that’s sometimes not always clear. There are times when that could be a deciding factor when a petition gatherer approaches you.

    Marty Bags Says:

I will sign if they show up on my doorstep.

However I am not actively going to the festivals, Mud Hens, voter registration offices, or other places where one finds roaming petition gatherers.

Why wasn’t this project started last week? The fouth of july seems to be filled with people holding clipboards trying to get signatures.

Call me cynical, but I am hard pressed to believe that MeKelJo could find 200 souls in Lucas County worthy (in their mind) of the moniker “LCRP volunteer”.

Marty – This is Jon Stainbrook we are talking about. There are a lot of “whys” one could ask, this being one.

Bottom line, I don’t think the people around him even understand.

    Interested Voter Says:

I’m sure all the Republican candidates on the ballot this year is disappointed by all this time and energy being spent on a nearly impossible petition drive. Wouldn’t time be better spent doing grassroots work for Kasich, Portman and Sarantou? This latest stunt speaks volumes about where Stainbrook’s priorities lie – his own promotion over Republican candidates. Who’d ever want to run as a Republican with a Chairman with such misplaced priorities.

Read the article – did not see anything mentioned about revenue sharing. Expense control is one way to make money but there probably is a community pot somewhere. If the Democrats have been so good all these years, Toledo should be an island of prosperity!

    (off topic alert here)

    –IV #11

Kasich — Likely doesn’t want anything to do with Lucas County, since it is such a Dem stronghold.

Portman — May be here off and on, but also likely not banking on help from Lucas County.

Sarantou — Don’t think he needs the support of the LCRP to advance.

So I suppose the only other thing the LCRP could be concerned with is the IOTT vs. KAPTUR race. As I’ve said before, and will say again, I will take wagers backing KAPTUR from anyone willing to put money on IOTT. (Of course I need a full psych exam first.)

Speaking of psych exams, there is expression INSANITY IS DOING THE SAME THING, AGAIN AND AGAIN, AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT. Will someone please tell that to anyone involved in running against KAPTUR.

I think this petition drive puts George Sarantou in an impossible position, and takes away critical support he could use, from the LCRP.

Stainbrook will exhaust what little volunteer help George could have counted on, for what can only be described as a “fool’s errand”.

    Just my opinion…

    Robin Says:

Here’s an idea…why don’t we take Lucas County back from special interest and political groups who really don’t care about anything else but how to advance their own means.
