Wilkowski goes from undecided to for Issue 3

20 Oct 2009

Story just posted on the Toledo Free Press website, Wilkowski to vote for Issue 3. Those of you who watched the debate sponsored by the Toledo Free Press and FOX Toledo may recall that when asked, Wilkowski at that time was undecided. The environmental concern aspect of the proposed casino Toledo site was referenced during the debate, that’s since been determined to not be considered a risk by the Ohio EPA. There’s more at the Toledo Free Press link.

This takes the Issue 3 element out of the mayoral race, since both candidates are in favor of it. What impact both mayoral candidates and the current mayor supporting this Issue on the voters will be discovered on election day…

I don’t know when Mike posted this news but it was this morning at 7:56a when Mike said yes he would vote for Issue 3. I know because I asked him the question.

Bell said he was in favor of Issue 3 at the debate on October 14th, that’s where when Wilkowski was asked he said he was still undecided.

I’m sorry, I typed Mike when I meant Keith. Mike is on with me on Wednesday.

Honesty in journalism! That’s what I like about Mike and the TFP

I bet he was waiting to see what bell would do.

Yes, Fred, giving people attribution for where something came first is something Michael does, though I don’t think the original non-mention was purposeful. Had it been stated as part of the interview, I’m guessing it would have been mentioned then.

Not Again, I don’t think so, I think Wilkowski’s original statement that he was undecided was an accurate one. It’s actually a risker position to support yes on Issue 3 since that puts him with Bell and Finkbeiner and the Blade does not support Issue 3. I was a bit surprised he decided to support it.

He had to, his unions do.

    LisaRenee Says:

Maybe, but our governor and quite a few others don’t.

He is glued to his union brothers. That is all that counts. Don’t want to piss the unions off. That might make obama mad.

    LisaRenee Says:

Sigh…Bell is endorsed by unions too, including the Teamsters so if that is your theory than it’s one Bell should be worried about as too. The police union as an example is a heavy supporter of Issue 3, that union has endorsed Bell.

That is why they both support issue 3. No choice. Bad choice for both. But wilkoski was playing the game of wait and see. His decision was purely political.

Frankly I’m disappointed that both candidates, whatever their reasons, support this ballot issue.

Lisa Renee – Has the Blade already come out against Issue 3? I certainly could have missed it, but all I’ve seen are Allan Block’s full-page ads supporting it.

Casinos: A bad venture published as an editorial on September 16th.

MIssed it. Thanks. Strange to have both that editorial and Allan Block’s ads supporting Issue 3 ..

Well, maybe there is a difference of opinion, it is a very divided issue.

obama had the courage to tell teachers he supported charter schools.

issue 3 will ensure more police are needed and hired by local government and it will provide police with additional off-duty income as well – never mind the negative impacts on our city and citizens or the buying-off of the state constitution.

    Zimmy’s right.

Some are studying apples and oranges to decide the future success or failure of casinos in Toledo by citing what transpired in other cities both positive and negative. Mom and Dad and Grandma or Grandpa with money in their pocket while not always take care of vital expenses before trying the casino. Some will go straight to the casinos on payday or social security month and the majority of those will return home empty handed. One thing is for sure, the pawnshop business and the criminal court system will flourish.

    ‘Two casino studies in conflict
Each side cites its own findings on impact, disputes others’

“Proponents say Ohio would gain 34,000 jobs if voters approve four casinos in November. Opponents say the casinos actually would result in a net loss of jobs.

Backers say the proposed 33 percent tax rate would fatten municipal coffers by $651 million a year and that the rate is in line with neighboring states’. Opponents say the tax rate is obscenely low and the benefits to local governments might never materialize.

Both sides in the increasingly heated political battle over Issue 3 are brandishing studies that they say back their arguments. Both studies were paid for by partisans in the debate, however.
