TruthPAC targeting Dan Gilbert incident from 28 years ago…
This in via e-mail from TruthPAC, only links that I could confirm are included:
DAN GILBERT’S GAMBLING ARREST STORY DOESN’T JIVE
According to 1981 news reports, a frightened bettor turned Dan Gilbert in for illegal gambling. He owed Gilbert money, so a policeman posing as the boy’s father arrested the Issue 3 money man and others for running a gambling ring with over a hundred thousand dollars at stake.
Now Dan Gilbert wants Ohio to grant him a casino monopoly with Issue 3.
On Monday in Cleveland, Gilbert said the arrest was over an innocent game between 5-7 friends, they only played with football cards and “no money was ever exchanged” in the case. His spokesmen have said many times Gilbert was never convicted in the case.
But in 2005 the Associated Press called it a football pool with $114,000 in wagers. AP says it wasn’t just a few friends – they reported the ring started with a dozen students but grew fast into many more with $50, $100 and $200 bets.
And if Gilbert wasn’t convicted as a result of the police sting operation, why in 2005 did the Lansing State Journal say “Gilbert was sentenced at age 19 along with three others for violating state gambling laws.”
Should Ohio grant a casino monopoly to a Michigan man arrested in a police sting for running an illegal gambling ring? Certainly not if he doesn’t come clean about his arrest for running an illegal gambling ring in Lansing, Michigan. And even if he does, experts say Gilbert may not be able to win a casino license at all. (READ ENQUIRER ARTICLE: link)
Vote NO on Issue 3 – a bad deal for Ohio.
I’m all for exposing the pasts of those involved, but if we are going to do that, then it should be open and transparent on both sides. That is not taking place.
Since it was reported in the media prior to this whole Issue 3 taking place that Gilbert had this happen in 1981, if it is against the law? It should have been exposed earlier, but it’s being done to try to sway voters on hype, ironically one of the things that TruthPAC accuses the pro-Issue 3 side of.
Please make up your minds on Issue 3 based on the facts, no matter if you are supporting it or opposing it.
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:49 pmThe fund-raising numbers are in and they are from just four sources.
Against: Jeffery Jacobs who is protecting the casinos he owns and Northfield Park who are hoping for slot machines at their track.
For: Dan Gilbert and Penn National who are just looking to make more money through changing Ohio’s constitution.
I don’t believe this was ever about what benefits Ohioans. It was about what benefits these parties.
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:16 pmI’m looking at the numbers now too, I don’t disagree with you…
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:21 pmThis issue 3 scam is about crooks trying to scam Ohio and crooked unions that want to go along, for the crumbs. Unions suck!
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:57 pmI don’t have a strong opinion one way or the other on this issue. I’ve never been to a casino and won’t go to one built in Ohio. My issue is why would we amend the Constitution to create a monopoly for ANY business?
Voters should actually read the amendment. As an example, it AUTHORIZES a casino in Toledo it does NOT guarantee that one will be built.
There is a lot of very subtle deception in this campaign.
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:37 amEven if it were built in “Toledo”, it’s really more Rossford. I’m not against gambling, but this is a bad bill. “If” Toledo were to ever get a casino, I’d like to see it on the river front or part of a 5/3rd-Arnea triangle.
For me, the Rossford casino will be about 20 minutes away. Greek Town is about 45 minutes. I only go to GT once a year as a single trip. I go GT several other times as part of seeing a baseball game or show.
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:28 amI really think the focus on the anti side is on the wrong thing. Really…the state constitution should not be amended to benefit one solo company. If the citizens of Ohio want casinos it should be done in a different way.
Even though I’m uncomfortable of the slimy nature of what happened 28 years ago, it’s next to meaningless.
