Mini-update and to all media/candidates/elected officials about Tent City…

23 Oct 2009

I’ve had to shift some priorities as far as things I’m working on, those of you looking forward to Part 2 in my series about salaries at local non-profits will have to wait until Monday night. There are some facts I need to make sure are properly sourced and time constraints related to other projects did not let me finish this week as I had hoped.

To the candidates: Tent City is next weekend, I have started emailing/calling elected officials and candidates to let the candidates know that on Saturday night (October 31st) starting from 6:30 to a little after 7:00 p.m. they will have the opportunity to talk to the unhoused and the volunteers at Tent City about their campaigns.

Friday night, October 30th is the Mayoral forum, that begins at 7:00 p.m. and goes for an hour. Campaigns confirmed back in April, the Bell campaign has re-confirmed their attendance, I’ll update when the re-confirmation from the Wilkowski campaign is given both campaigns have confirmed, more details to follow as to what you can expect.

To candidates/electeds and the media: Sunday morning, the Celebrity Breakfast…Where the celebrities are the guests…The opportunity for elected officials and candidates to help serve the community, talk with people and get some blog love. Set up for that begins at 6:00 a.m. volunteer slots are from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. If we have more volunteers than needed to help with the serving/clean up? Don’t worry, there are still ways you can get involved, even if is just enjoying a meal and conversation and please help spread the word to your colleagues/fellow candidates. A few of you come down whether it is election time for you or not, it’s noticed, it’s appreciated… We also thank those in the media who not only cover Tent City but who come down to volunteer. The spirit of generosity is a powerful one during Tent City, not from just the monetary/item donation aspect but from those who give of themselves.

To everyone wishing to donate winter clothes, you can still drop them off at any local fire station. Please only donate winter clothing, I’ve been told the most needed items are jeans, gloves and long underwear. While you may no longer be able to wear that dashing bikini? It’s really not going to help keep anyone warm this winter, not even as ear muffs…

If you have any questions concerning Saturday night or Sunday morning at Tent City, please email me. If you have any questions in reference to donations, please email ken at ken@1matters.org. If you have general questions, you can email me or leave them in the comments and you can also visit 1Matters.
