Mayor sends letter to mayoral candidates and council, Dear Mike…

19 Oct 2009

I recommend taking the time to read the pdf of the letter that the Mayor has sent to all of Council and the two mayoral candidates.

Here’s part of it:

To: Michael Bell
Keith Wilkowski
President of City Council Joe McNamara
Members of City Council

Dear Mike:

In recent days I have read that both candidates for Mayor are opposed to raising revenues of the City of Toledo. That is exactly what Toledo City Council members have said and done for the past ten months. As a result, the City of Toledo, in spite of many of our employees now working a 32 hour week and taking a 20% cut in pay, all of our labor unions supporting cost reductions in 2009, and our Executive Exempt employees taking pay cuts from 10% to 40$, TOLEDO CITY’S BUDGET is $7.7 MILLION IN THE HOLE. If Council accepts the $3.2 million offer from First Energy Solutions our budget deficit will be reduced to $4.5 million. If Council had passed a fair refuse fee increase, and a 50% income tax credit ordinance early this year, Toledo would now have a balanced budget.

Later it states:

Mr. Bell, Mr. Wilkowski and members of Council, you are digging a very big hole for yourselves. Council is now considering hiring both a Police and Fire class in 2010. Good idea – if you have the money to pay the new officers. You don’t and won’t – unless you increase the refuse fee and the tax credit – or boost the payroll tax – which candidates Bell and Wilkowski say they are opposed to. Where will the revenue come from?

It is both amazing and tragic that you fail to comprehend the consequences of the recession we are in. A recession means – that doing what we once did is no longer affordable. We cannot take-in $25 million less per year and still maintain the same manning level in police and fire departments.

Toledoans deserve the truth – not pandering political propaganda.

The Mayor forgot to mention how to spend ten- thousand dollars at a time, from a broke city. He also forgot to mention how to lose businesses, a great tax base. He forgot to mention how to hold the police and fireman hostage for a 3/4 % renewal. Great job Carty, the only thing your letter is worth is wiping a place where the sun does not shine.

    great comment jonc.

it seems that Carty is trying to lay the ground work for a bunch of ‘I told you sos’, which is his mind might save his legacy.

Oh well, his reign is nearly over.

I read this years ago and have forgotten the columnist who originated this most eloquent statement. I apologize for the inability to give credit to the writer of this but it so fits this moment:

“Famous quotations are the last refuge of newspaper columnists and other scoundrels, so I try to avoid them, but at the moment I can’t help thinking of what Oliver Cromwell said to the so-called Rump Parliament in 1653. Voters would do well to send the same message to the” current Mayor of Toledo:

“You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”

    Mike,

It may be Eugene Robinson from the Washington Post

Here is the link to the story you may be referring about:

Didn’t Carty hire back a bunch of people back at 40 hours a week and didn’t he hire in his son-in-law for seasonal work at $25 an hour? Isn’t he trying to run that Route 66 bar out of town?

I still believe the garbage fee is illegal.

Taxing people just because they don’t work within the city limits isn’t cool either.

I really can’t feel all that sorry for the city employees who have taken wage and hour cuts because my husband and I have had to do the same in our private sector jobs. Things are tough for everyone.

    Jason–
That was it! Thank you for taking the time to research the article! Hail Eugene Robinson! It made an impression on me then when he was talking about the House of Representatives and even more so now with this narcisstic tirant for a mayor! The idiot doesn’t get that everyone in this community is “over” done with him!
    Thanks again Jason!!
    Mike
