Here's a more recent one, on blogging basics that covers the discussion/debate on when to link and how, that is a bit closer to my feeling on the matter, emphasis is mine.

4. Don’t sell yourself in comments. Bloggers have differing opinions about whether it’s OK to link to your own blog in the comments at another blog. Some think it’s a bit like poaching traffic or promoting yourself in an inappropriate place (after all, this is someone’s personal blog space). Others think it’s OK to leave a permalink if you’ve written something extremely relevant. Just linking to yourself for the sake of having your link out there is a definite no-no. Most platforms ask you to enter your name, e-mail, and URL before you leave a comment and then, when your comment is posted, readers can click on your name and be taken to your blog. Putting your URL in the comment itself is redundant. If you’re reading a post and you’ve written something similar you can go two ways: * Give an overview of your thoughts/post, then let readers know you’ve said much more on the subject and invite them to read your post by listing a permalink to that article. * Give an overview of your thoughts and leave it at that.

Roland, if you don’t want to discuss things here, that’s fine, you don’t participate here anymore because you don’t like the fact that I allow people to post without using their real names. I don’t allow insults that go beyond a certain level, had Not Again crossed that line I would have addressed it, and he was correct that your initial line was one that appeared a bit authoritative.

That said, there is a difference between actually wanting to discuss something and a drive by comment. If you want to use my blog as a drive by? That’s fine but there were those who responded to you that you could have decided to engage in discussion with. Or, you could decide to focus on something else, which you did.

The advice given in the past as far as building blog traffic was to participate and then share something like, “I’ve gone into this in more detail on my blog” — or “I wrote a similar post the other day” it’s the basic advice I give anyone who asks me. I’ve never suggested to just drop links with no discussion, on many blogs that gets deleted.

Perhaps if you actually wanted to add to the discussion rather than just linking it would have generated discussion. The real shame is that there were other comments besides Not Again’s if you were truly interested in discussion. Sujay’s as an example…

Not Again is correct that you did state you had decided the people of Toledo should boycott Kroger. None of us have that kind of power.
