Mike Bell calls for end of insider politics, releases strategic plan to make Toledo a high performing city again

Mike Bell today released his comprehensive strategic plan for the future – a document that details the steps he will take as Mayor to make Toledo a high-functioning city again.

The platform places a heavy emphasis on community-wide cooperation and regionalism as key components to its success.

“We must break the grip of insider dealings and politics as usual, which have prevented Toledo from reaching its potential under 16 years of strong mayor rule,” Mr. Bell said.

“Our city’s best days are ahead – but only if we work directly with the people and bring new leadership, a fresh approach, and energy to solve the problems facing us.”

Mr. Bell’s platform is the result of a community-wide process led by Dr. Steven Cady of Bowling Green State University. Dr. Cady gained input at seven sessions this summer from more than 200 citizens representing neighborhoods, labor, business, and the region.

Contained in a document called “Pride and performance: Strong leadership for a high-functioning city,” it outlines the specific steps Mr. Bell will take to balance the city budget, create jobs, ensure the safety of residents, improve public schools, and revive neighborhoods. It also addresses health and wellness, cultural diversity and local attractions.

The platform is available online for all citizens to download at mikebellfortoledo.com. “The Bell campaign is the only one with a platform based on broad community input – business owners, community leaders, and regular taxpaying people. The strength of that approach shows,” said Dr. Cady.

If I was Bell, I would ask Keith this (or some variation of), “You’ve been active in Toledo politics for thirty years. During that time, you’ve held elected office and have had major roles behind the scenes. In this capacity Keith, you have contributed either directly or in directly to the current sad state of our city, why would giving you another office to hold change this lackluster record?
