North Toledo, OH – The North Toledo Network will host the 16th Annual Halloween Safe Night to benefit children of “Toledo’s First Neighborhood” on October 29, 2009 with a kick-off event starting at 5:00 p.m. at Lagrange Elementary, 1001 N. Erie Street, Toledo, Ohio. Over 300 children and families residing in the neighborhood are anticipated to join in the evening’s festivities which are expected to last until 7:00 p.m. and will include children’s games, refreshments, chaperone-guided trick or treat safe paths through the neighborhood, a haunted house and a teen dance.
Relying on donations from neighborhood businesses and individuals of candy, food and prizes, the free, family-focused event strives to provide a sense of community, celebration and fun for neighborhood residents. According to Debbie Frison, GEAR UP Interim Program Director and current NTN President, “Halloween Safe Night is an important tradition in the neighborhood. The hard work of dozens of volunteers along with generous donations from the community provide a safe environment for area children who otherwise would miss out on Halloween fun to experience the joy of trick or treating in their own neighborhood.”
Since 1994, the North Toledo Network (NTN) has banned together each year to make Halloween Safe Night a reality in North Toledo. The NTN is an organization consisting of area residents and organizations including: Salem Lutheran Church, Beach House Family Shelter, Friendly Center, Lagrange Elementary School, Plain Talk, United North, Northgate Community Church, NorthRiver Weed & Seed, Summit YMCA, GEAR UP, Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Volunteers of America.
In its 16th year, Halloween Safe Night organizers anticipate that the need and turnout to this year’s event will be even greater than years past. “As with years past, the community support is steadily pouring in, including a special donation made by youngsters at the North Toledo Boys and Girls Club who raised money to purchase several bags of candy to be distributed to the trick or treaters. But, as always, more candy donations are needed,” said NorthRiver Weed & Seed Manager, Valerie Moffitt of United North .
