“Cash for Clunker” bill – politics and press
The Detroit News has an article about the passage of the bill sponsored by Ohio’s Betty Sutton, ‘Cash for clunkers’ bill now up to Senate that mentions some of the Republican opposition to this bill. In the Columbus Dispatch the article goes a bit further, referencing comments made by Ohio GOP Chairman Kevin DeWine and updating their posting with information from a media release that was sent out by the Ohio Democratic Party. That release is here in full after the fold:
Republicans In Disarray: Ohio Republican Party Attacks The Bill Ohio Republicans Supported
COLUMBUS – Today, the Ohio Democratic Party responded to the Ohio Republican Party’s attack on Congresswoman Betty Sutton’s (D-OH-13) bill to incentivize the purchase of new, fuel-efficient cars.
“The Ohio Republican Party is in so much disarray that it puts collecting $10 contributions ahead of legislation that would boost Ohio’s auto industry and save Ohio jobs,” said Doug Kelly, ODP Executive Director. “In a desperate and ham-handed attempt to raise funds, Ohio GOP Chairman Kevin DeWine attacked four of his own Congressional members – Reps. Turner, Austria, Tiberi and LaTourette – for supporting something that would be good for Ohio. What other things important to Ohioans are Republicans going to oppose in their next clumsy fundraising appeal? Agriculture? Small businesses? Apple pie? Baseball?”
Yesterday, the Ohio Republican Party sent an email condemning Congresswoman Sutton’s bill, calling the idea “insanity” and “wasteful.” The bipartisan bill had the support of 59 Republicans, including Reps. Steve Austria (R-OH-7) and Pat Tiberi (R-OH-12). The bill was co-sponsored by Reps. Mike Turner (R-OH-3) and Steve LaTourette (R-OH-14), who also voted for it. The legislation would stimulate auto sales by giving people vouchers for trading in low-mileage vehicles (generally small trucks, SUVs and mini-vans) for new cars that are more fuel-efficient.
The Cars For Clunkers legislation is actually very focused and is only available for a limited four month time frame. It offers participants the opportunity to trade in certain older cars for certain other new ones. Unfortunately, many cars do not qualify for the program and therefore are still ideal for the ‘traditional’ car donor option. Such non-qualifying cars let people give their cars to non-profit organizations who help people with many different kinds of needs, like supporting youth organizations or our older folks or to help promote the arts and health research.
Help yourself with the Cash for Clunkers program if you qualify or if you don’t qualify or would like to help others, give your “clunker” to charity and take a tax write-off!
Here are 400 not-for-profit organizations that can always benefit from your ‘clunker’ or unneeded vehicle. To donate your car, just click on the link to the charity on the web pages below.
