TFP: Ben Konop’s turn on the cover and more…

31 May 2009

The coverage of the Mayoral candidates continues in this week’s edition of the Toledo Free Press as Brandi Barhite interviews Ben Konop. As was done with Keith Wilkowski, Jim Moody and Mike Bell, it’s a thorough biography as well as questions for the men who want to be Mayor. If you are interested in learning more about Ben Konop? It’s a highly recommended read.

It won’t shock anyone that I don’t agree with Tim Higgins piece that is against the TARTA sales tax, his suggestion that TARTA become a non-profit, while interesting, wouldn’t really change how TARTA is ran since it is not ran to create a huge profit. His additional suggestion that the riders of TARTA be charged for consumption would basically negate the use of TARTA by many. We do currently have a system of transportation based on consumption, it’s called taxi cabs and if people could afford the price charged? We’d probably have even more cabs…Many of those without public transportation in the areas that do not want TARTA are forced with that, I’ve yet to meet one person who doesn’t have a car who felt TARTA wasn’t needed…

My position continues to be one where I believe it should be up to the voters of our County to decide how we want TARTA funded and where we as Lucas County residents want complete access to. I’d also point out that all of the communities who have TARTA have better service than Toledo because they have what we don’t; Call-A-Ride. So I disagree with the statement as expressed by Tim that the “rural communities in the county that will receive little or no service from TARTA.” A good number of those who rely on public transportation do contribute to tax dollars that are used for roads. To selectively use a consumption based system is contradictory to how libraries, zoos, schools, and a variety of other programs that tax dollars go to approved by voters.

Michael Miller in The Eighth Commandment focuses beyond the recently hotly discussed topic of the accusation Pink Slip made on Swampbubbles of plagiarism directed at Maggie Thurber. He shares what steps were taken and what the future holds when it comes to ensuring attribution is given where needed.

My dad was a huge fan of Jack Nicklaus, so this interview done by Duane Ramsey made it on my list of favorite stories in this week’s edition. Another piece written by Ramsey on intermodal projects also is a recommended read.

There are also a variety of sports, business and arts/community related stories, both online and in print…
