Unemployment numbers top story of the day…
03 Mar 2009
Earlier in the Blade and on some of the noon broadcasts, one of the top stories is the unemployment numbers that were just released.
The Blade has a list so you can see how Toledo and Lucas County are fairing compared to the rest of the state. I suppose the good news is that our County doesn’t have the highest unemployment in the state. Youngstown topped Toledo by just a small amount, they had 14.4% Toledo has 14.3%, Lucas County is at 13.3%.
Good effort by Toledo….getting that close to Youngstown must have been tough.

March 4th, 2009 at 7:45 pmThe beginning of the end for Toledo, in my opinion dates back to 1984-1985 when the big corporate layoffs took place, most notably at O-I and OCF. Those in a certain age bracket recall them – they were massive and brutal. And in the case of Owens Corning, it didn’t have to be as bad as it turned out to be by the late 1980’s. Wickes tried to buy OCF. The Board, or top VP’s, who didn’t want to lose their cushy positions took what was known as a poison pill – someone more corporate minded will have to explain how this works, but it’s basically dishonest, and prevented, in this case, a strong company from taking over OCF, a weak company that had been really badly managed for years.
Sort of a smaller version of how the country has been mismanaged by vultures, useless idiots, and flat out greedy jerks. The short time in the 1990’s when it appeared that jobs were coming back to Toledo – was due to Clinton and Greenspan doing a lot of financial tricks that were basically illusion, not reality. Toledo has gone downhill since 1984. It will never come back.
March 4th, 2009 at 8:17 pmI’m new to town. Which political party has been running Lucas County and Toledo for let’s say the last 20-30 years or so? If anyone can answer this I would like to know.
Thanks!
