Something Nice: Lucas County’s new web look….

08 Feb 2009

Head over to www.co.lucas.oh.us, when I went to look something up on Areis today, at first I thought I was at the wrong place…They’ve done a total redesign of the website. There are lots of new features that I have not yet fully explored…

As an update, after I posted this here, Fred LeFebvre is not pleased that the company who did the design is not local over on Swampbubbles. It’s CivicPlus who is located in Manhattan, Kansas. I don’t disagree that if there was a local company willing/able to do the same web product at a similar cost, that would be an issue. If it was quite a bit less, we already use the large savings amount to justify not flying out of Toledo Express, to not hire contractors or subcontractors who are from this area.

I did a quick search of the Lucas County Commissioner’s Meeting Reports – This item was voted on by the Lucas County Commissioners back on July 8, 2008 and for Fred who wondered who voted how? Tina Skeldon Wozniak and Ben Konop voted yes, Pete Gerken was absent…

CivicPlus was the lower bid, of the two, Communica, Inc., who was local wanted $173,751 compared to $108,200…over $65,000 more.

The word must not have gotten out. There are many local web guys who would like that job if they knew about it.

If you read the resolution, it was for more than just web design, it was also service and maintenance, why more didn’t submit bids I don’t know. Bids were sought in May of 2008.

Generally, Ohio law does not allow a county to give preference to a local company. The purpose of Ohio’s competitive bidding procedures is to save the taxpayers money not as a local economic development tool.
