No shocker – Union will go to court to block Mayor’s three day no pay plan
We’ve talked about this in the past, including expecting that there would not be union support for the Mayor’s plan to require all city workers take three days off without pay to help balance the budget. The Mayor used the example of Chicago when he talked about this in the past, and this is exactly what happened there as well, the Unions questioned it.
Unions promise legal action over Toledo shutdown.
So, what happens now? I don’t expect the Union’s temporary restraining order to be denied, which would in effect put an end to part of the proposed time off since one of the days is the day after Thanksgiving. What will also be interesting will be the Mayor’s budget that is due out this weekend, will it include the amount of savings that the City Administration expects to generate with the three day shut down?
Czerniak TALKS a good game….
but as an ex-AFSCME member, let me tell you – he has his head so far up Finkbeiner’s ass it is not funny.
They will never seek injunctive relief on this matter. Bet.
November 13th, 2008 at 11:30 amOkay, I’ll bet you a coffee at Downtown Latte, if they file the injunction? You buy, if they don’t? I’ll buy.

November 13th, 2008 at 11:47 amThis doesn’t seem like a long range plan to balance the budget anyway. Let’s get real. Someone at the city, county, or state level needs to work on job creation/expansion, because frankly these same folks who have been around for the past decade aren’t getting the job done.

Is Miguel aware of this ???
November 13th, 2008 at 2:59 pmEl, I meet people for coffee, I meet people for lunch, sometimes I even go to events with people. He’s never had any reason to be concerned, nor would he.
Mark, that’s a valid point, the amount of savings this would generate has been part of the debatable aspect of all of this. The real solution is more jobs and a focus on providing base services.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:18 pmMark, what makes you think anyone in government has a clue how to create/expand jobs?
November 13th, 2008 at 10:20 pmThis reminds me of the big 3 begging for a bail out. These big 3 clowns need to get tough and negotiate with the union and stop this bullshit. Is Honda, Toyota, Kia, or BMW all with US manufacturing plants and huge US payrolls begging for a bailout? Hell no, and it is because they are not controlled by the union scumbags. These union folks are destroying this country. I say let the so called big 3 go bankrupt (they are culprits too, for allowing the unions). This will break the union bullshit and hopefully make what is left of the “big 3″ more competitive.
November 13th, 2008 at 11:13 pmNO to bailout of US auto manufacturing. The “Big 3″ needs to grow balls and tell their workers, “you guys got to work to get paid”. No tax payer bail out. Go figure.
November 13th, 2008 at 11:17 pmThis is typical of Toledo unions and a big part of the reason we are in the mess we are. The unions do not care at all about the situation the city is in. They will fight the city on every cost-cutting measure. They will take everything they can get and suck the city dry.
They have to realize that the city leadership and the unions are in this mess together and it will take sacrifices from all to right the ship of state. But that kind of thinking is a little complex for the city’s labor leadership.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:03 amBrian?
What are the protocol features available to just close Toledo down, “manipulate” some paperwork to make all union contracts null and void, re-naming the city and hiring qualified people and opening back up with the name “TAledo?
November 14th, 2008 at 5:20 amI don’t think it can be done. It does have its appeal. . .
November 14th, 2008 at 7:31 amBrian Schwartz, I don’t disagree with what you said about the unions and I completely understand that conversing with a normally intelligent individual in a union environment is not the best way to catch them at the peak of brain power utilization. But was any effort made to involve the union in the process of finding the most palatable way to cut costs, or did they learn about it on the eleven o’clock news like the rest of us?
The fight over this could cost us more than we might save by implementing the plan.
November 14th, 2008 at 9:12 amBobtheDad,
There probably was no effort to involve the unions. Working with people is not Carty’s forte. . .
November 14th, 2008 at 12:26 pmEveryone needs to stop whining
