Layoff is heard more often in business and government…
Union says it’s expecting layoffs in Lucas County offices
Toledo Powertrain puts 110 on two-week layoff
22 Toledo civilian police employees face layoff
Though it appears the last story regarding the civilian police employees is as a result of the three day furlough that the Mayor wants and the Powertrain story is only a two week layoff, the first story about County employees appears to suggest a longer layoff than a few weeks. It also should be pointed out that some layoffs have already happened at the County level as well as some changes in workers scheduling to avoid layoffs:
In August, 11 people were furloughed from the Department of Job and Family Services after state funding was cut by $1.3 million.
In the auditor’s office, layoffs recently were averted among more than 80 employees represented by United Auto Workers Local 12 when four hourly and salaried staff members volunteered to go to part-time status, said Michelle Schultz, chairman of Local 12’s hourly unit in the auditor’s office.
There is an increase in claims to the Department of Job and Family Services, with the way the economy currently is, it’d be logical to assume that will continue to rise rather than decrease which means if staff numbers have already been cut it will take even longer for those attempting to receive assistance to get it.
It also appears that the Lucas County Common Pleas Court does not feel it can cut it’s budget as was suggested:
County officials hoped a 5 percent cut would trim $3.5 million from the roughly $150 million budget, but some heads said their departments already are slashed to the bone.
Lucas County Common Pleas Court Judges Ruth Ann Franks, James Jensen, and Gary Cook said in a letter that such an across-the-board funding request violates the legal “precept” requiring counties to adequately fund the administration of justice.
Considering the budget issues facing Lucas County, the discussions between Lucas County and Toledo with some of the cuts in funding suggested by Toledo that involve the County could make for some further adjustments in the proposed Toledo budget.
Earlier this year I went several weeks, at my job, where I was lucky if I got two days in a week. At my hubby’s work, they’re currently cutting hours and letting people go. He has gone from 40 hrs a week to 35 hrs a week. I guess these government workers are going to have to suck it up and take a couple unpaid days off, just like everyone else.
