Wozniak and Gerken making case for responsible government

THE CASE FOR RESPONSIBILITY
Toledo, Ohio – In response to the resolutions that Commissioner Ben Konop offered today, Commissioners Wozniak and Gerken are both making the case for responsible county government.
While both Wozniak and Gerken praised the direction of Konop’s resolutions, and in fact worked with Konop on a resolution to provide funding for a senior prescription discount card, the Commissioners could
not act irresponsibly and defer the important investment in failing windows at 701 Adams Street.
“In these tough economic times, I have consistently supported every job creation effort that works,” said Commissioner Wozniak. “Delaying these much needed repairs will cost us much more in the long-run. Even more importantly, the health and safety of our employees and building visitors must be our first priority.”
In addition to Commissioner Wozniak’s comments, Commissioner Gerken cited independent energy studies which show that deferring the replacement of leaky, cracked windows would cost the county upward of
$95,000 a year in lost energy costs.
“Ultimately, this is about the taxpayer’s bottom line. Lucas County does not have the dollars to devote to Commissioner Konop’s projects at the expense of necessary maintenance to a building that houses some of our key social service agencies,” said Commissioner Gerken.
“We cannot afford to risk doing to this building what happened to the United Way building, and we cannot afford to lose another building in downtown Toledo by delaying needed maintenance,” said Gerken in closing.
Lisa,
On this one, I have to agree with Tina and the Gherkin.
I think that they have their priorities right, this time.
October 21st, 2008 at 4:48 pmI’ve seen the building, some of the windows did need replacement. Unless they were planning on moving, and selling the building, which it does not appear is going to happen, I agree it makes sense to keep it in a state of proper repair.
