Wilkowski Promotes Wind Power To Propel Toledo’s Green Economy
Likely 2009 mayoral candidate proposes testing program in quest to make city a leader in wind energy generation, wind industry jobs
Toledo, OH – Recognizing the central role that clean energy will play in Toledo’s economic future, likely 2009 mayoral candidate Keith Wilkowski today will propose a wind testing program to jumpstart the development of wind power in the city. The former Lucas County Commissioner held a press conference today at 2:30 P.M. in front of One Government Center in downtown Toledo.
Wilkowski’s proposal calls for establishing a wind testing program through which the city would erect testing towers to efficiently monitor wind speeds for potential turbine locations. The program would
loan out the testing towers to property owners interested in installing wind turbines at their sites. Additionally the city would seek to partner with cell phone companies to install testing equipment on existing cell phone towers.
“Wind power is a strategy for securing our community’s energy future and strengthening our green economy,” asserts Wilkowski. “Toledo should be a center of wind power generation and wind industry jobs.”
The program is estimated to cost around $50,000 in the first year. This would provide for the equipment, installation, and removal costs of ten testing towers. The city would then partner with the University of Toledo and organizations such as Green Energy Ohio to monitor and analyze the data.
In September, Wilkowski proposed the development of a $5 million solar field on a city-owned capped landfill. Toledo City Councilman Joe McNamara is pursuing $1 million in the city’s 2009 capital improvements budget to kick-start that project.

I like the wind technology idea. I went to see the turbines in B.G. after they put them in. I do hope that they take into account the (nobody yell at me) migratory paths of birds.
There are plenty of places they can be placed without interfering, unnecessarily, with animal life.
