The Truth: Temporary increase in racial tension if Obama wins?
The interesting thing about the Affirmative Action discussion and Obama has been reported in the past by the Sojourner’s Truth suggesting that if Obama wins that will demonstrate that Affirmative Action is not needed in this country to both the white and the minority community. The This Strikes Us mentions this again this week ending with this:
What happens if Obama is elected? Does it tamp down people’s fear of the unknown … people of all sort? Not likely. So many people are speaking openly these days about the ramifications for the African-American community about an Obama victory. There is a reasonable expectation that an Obama win will mean that calls for the end to affirmative action will increase exponentially from both the white and the minority communities.
In other words, Obama’s victory – should that occur – offers the potential of ratcheting up the conversation about race and, temporarily, the tension as well.Is that worth it?
Absolutely.
Some information on Issue 38 which is the Children’s Services Board Levy is a recommended read this week. I also recommend the cover story for this week about JaJuan Turner who is not only an inspiration but has also been dubbed “the next Tyler Perry” by Geneva Chapman. Those are just a few of the stories you might enjoy from this week’s Sojourner’s Truth.
What is Obama culturally? He had a white mother and a black father. He was raised by white grandparents. He identifies with people who use their intelligence to pursue better lives. He has compassion for people, but I think still expects them to try to do their best. He works, he expects others to work. I doubt Obama is going to “give” black people anything. He may give them “opportunity”, but if they screw up I imagine he will say “sorry about that”, and go on to someone else. I can’t imagine him as “kicking back”, and channel-surfing. I don’t imagine he has patience with those who do, or those whose main accomplishment in life is three or four bastards (either as father or mother). Getting elected is one thing, supporting damn foolishness is something else.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:29 pmI think you have a point Greenrax, I’m not going to pretend I’m an Obama fan, but it does appear from what I have heard him say that he appears to support economic based qualifiers rather than those based on race alone. Which is something others have suggested, that those who are black who are voting for Obama believing that he will somehow focus more on their issues, are going to be disappointed.
If I remember correctly he has stated that he did not feel his two daughters should receive preferential treatment based on their race alone given the fact that they have had opportunities many children have not received.
Should the United States elect the first black president it would be difficult to argue that Affirmative Action was still needed based on race alone.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:33 amWell, the KKK is hoping for this which is why they support him…
October 20th, 2008 at 9:08 amWell, I think the Democratic Party would take votes from the devil himself (or maybe that is what the KKK is) to get a democratic President elected. Maybe their votes will overcome the shenanigans in Florida this time.
October 20th, 2008 at 11:16 amThe KKK supports Obama? This I highly doubt, and I’m afraid of what material Google will pull up of this
A proposed law to axe affirmative action is already on the ballot in five states for this November – Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
I know affirmative action still exists in most universities in the sense that minorities with lesser qualifications than “majorities” have a much higher potential for getting scholarships (and I’ve definitely experienced this firsthand…
, but how often does this happen in the workplace when it can be proven? I have not yet seen this in the corporate world where companies are required to have a certain “minority quota”.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:46 pmSorry guys, I missed the KKK reference. It’s not true.
Link to Snopes which has declared this to be false.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:50 pmthats not what i was referring to:
October 20th, 2008 at 3:11 pmhttp://www.splcenter.org/blog/2008/06/11/president-obama-many-white-supremacists-are-celebrating/
I was asked this question the other day…
If Obama wins the election will there be rioting in the streets throughout the United States by McCain supporters?
If Obama loses the election will there be rioting in the streets throughout the United States by Obama supporters?
I guess the true test of race relations in America, will be determined not by who gets into office, but what happens after the winner is declared.
Also more drama…
Authorities say someone slashed tires on at least 30 parked vehicles while their owners were attending a Barack Obama rally in a North Carolina coliseum.

October 20th, 2008 at 3:27 pmWell Barga, so it seems that the white supremacists are just as dumb as we (rational people) thought.
From a distant view of the Toledo riots, I think it’s very likely that there could be rioting by (some) Obama supporters if he does not win the election IF some people perceive that the loss was due in any part to racism. That’s really not likely with McCain supporters. First of all, Obama’s supporters are in general, far more passionate about their candidate. (After all, consider how willing some Obama supporters have been to at least verbally abuse their fellow Democrats)
Bishop, you are right about this being a true test of race relations in America. Hopefully, people will realize that violence and hatred only brew more violence and hatred. Neither candidate certainly, in any shape or form, any sort of violent opposition caused by their supporters.
October 20th, 2008 at 7:52 pmJust to follow up with my post above…
James Carville hinted at riots if Obama loses the election. In early October on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, james Carville proclaimed that Barack Obama will be the slam dunk winner of the election in November.
However, he followed up by hinting at riots if Obama were to lose.
First David Gergen keeps bringing up the race factor as an excuse for a possible Obama loss.
And James Carville suggest riots if Obama loses. He says, “Let me be clear, I said you can call the dogs and light the fire and leave the house. I think it sounds over. Now let me be clear here, if Obama goes in this race with a 5-point lead and losing this election, the consequences are – bull, man. I mean I don’t think that’s going to happen, but i think David it’s a point to bring up. But you stop and contemplate this country if Obama goes in and he has a consistent five point lead and loses the election, it would be very, very, very dramatic out there.”

October 20th, 2008 at 7:56 pmtheir idea has little to do with McCain supporters protesting as it does with what Obama will do. The KKK believes that he will strongly favor the blacks, to such an extent that us average whities will up and get ‘em.
More or less
October 20th, 2008 at 8:09 pm# 10 Bishop Says:
October 20th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
“James Carville hinted at riots if Obama loses the election.” “First David Gergen keeps bringing up the race factor as an excuse for a possible Obama loss”
I would agree that if there are riots due to an Obama loss, it will truly be due to racism. After all 98% of blacks are voting for Obama and if he loses there will be a lot of sour grapes. If there are riots the national guard will deal with the perpetrators.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:18 pmYes Bishop, Ottawa Hills will erupt in flames as enraged whites burn their mansions down and order their butlers to throw bricks at the police and loot Elder Biermann and Dillards!
October 20th, 2008 at 9:49 pmBarga, you’re a genius! You figured out single-handedly that the kkk is endorsing Obama without ever even bothering to check with the klan themselves! You go dude! Don’t let their denials of this fool you! Everybody knows that they want to keep the endorsement a secret by only informing leftist bloggers of their REAL intent!
October 20th, 2008 at 10:07 pmKeep up the good work!
oh, i am so sorry, I only was thinking that the SPLC was the leader in hate crimes and groups. What was I thinking…
October 20th, 2008 at 10:08 pmSepp…
When black rage explodes, it’s a riot. When white rage erupts, it’s…a protest.
Perhaps you should read the book, When Whites Riot by Sheila Smith McKoy.
Get more info here:
http://www.wisc.edu/wisconsinpress/books/3223.htm
The residents in Ottawa Hills are not exempt from rioting. Rioting is an anger management issue, not a race issue as some would try to make it out to be.
In fact, whites rioted and burned police cars and private businesses in Washington D.C. after a black Nazi rally was held. They threw bottles and rocks at the peaceful supporters and the police as they entered to calm the situation.
You can read more about that here:
http://www.diggersrealm.com/mt/archives/001314.html
Sounds alot like what happened in the North End of Toledo in 2005 only reversed.
I don’t condone rioting regardless of who is doing it. Nevertheless, to make references or imply that only African-Americans riot is definately false.
Not to mention during the civil rights movement how many blacks were attacked by police armed with clubs, fire hoses and police dogs, just because they were having peaceful protest.
Anger and rioting has NO color!
October 20th, 2008 at 10:14 pmDigger’s realm? Bishop are you serious? Try finding the story anywhere else. Every reference to it is linked to “digger’s realm”…yes, every other branch of the media never noticed a nazi riot in D.C…except for those sleuths at Digger’s realm!
Get real!
And, where did I make any reference to blacks rioting in that post? It was an answer to your absurd remark that McCain’s supporters could riot.
Could they? Sure anything is possible. Likely? Hardly.
But since the question is on the table, what is the likelyhood…in your oppinion of course…that blacks would riot if Obama lost?
October 20th, 2008 at 11:22 pmBarga, how would the SPLC know who the kkk is endorsing better than the group itsself?
October 20th, 2008 at 11:26 pmIf the SPLC is dumb enough to believe and then repeat internet rumors, they have a lot of work to do on their credibility.
right, cause you know, the KKK is going to always come out and tell the truth
October 20th, 2008 at 11:38 pmSepp…I hope no rioting happens.
However again, as I said in my earlier post…
Rioting and anger has no color.
McCain supporters can riot just like Obama supporters.
The bottom line is that anything is possible. Hopefully there are no riots or isolated incidents at all.
On another note:
The KKK or as I like to call them, “The coward clowns in sheets” did NOT endorse Barack Obama!
October 21st, 2008 at 12:18 amYeah Barga, they’re going to publicly deny it when they really mean the opposite.
October 21st, 2008 at 1:03 amWanna buy a UFO?
Indeed Bishop anyone can riot but, the odds of the McCain crowd rioting is highly unlikely. Some people will be pissed off but, our elections are guaranteed to piss off about 45% of the nation every 4 years like death and taxes.
October 21st, 2008 at 1:12 amsepp, you believe that an organization which claims that all doctors have determined that blacks are inherently dumber then whites, but then deny to be racist, is likely to tell the truth?
October 21st, 2008 at 9:20 amI think that an organization that says it’s NOT endorsing a candidate probably would know better than the internet’s rumor mill. Then Barga, you have to ask, why would they lie about it? What would anyone gain by it?
October 21st, 2008 at 9:33 amDude, it’s an internet rumor that was debunked long ago.
’nuff said.
go read my source, then come and tell me where it was debunked
also, where did i ever say endorse?
October 21st, 2008 at 9:50 amMy thoughts in 2005……
“They Burned My Bar!”
Well it wasn’t really my bar, but for me, it was my daily hangout during four years of summer days in the 60’s. I lived in the North end (near Woodward H.S.) and worked in Maumee while going to school trying to save every penny for tuition etc. I was fortunate and very grateful for getting a ride to work and back from “seasoned” gents who lived close by and worked at the same place. These men were staunch Democrats and pro union. It’s the way it was in the neighborhood.
Without fail, each and every day on the way home we stopped at Jim and Lou’s bar on Mulberry St. for a beer….actually, for two beers. Not once in four years was I “allowed” to buy a round of beers for the four of us. I was sternly told to “SAVE IT.” Even then tuition was not cheap…and they knew it.
I learned a lot about life at Jim and Lou’s during those days. Fortunately, I was a good listener and I knew my place. I didn’t talk much at the bar, but if I said anything, I knew it was accepted by nods and “attaboys.” If the gents didn’t agree. they let me know it in no uncertain terms.
The primary topics of conversation were sports and politics. I knew a lot about sports (Tigers/Indians), and I learned a lot about politics….meaning local politics. Was there any other kind? These guys knew everything that was going on in the area and there were politicians who often stopped by to learn for themselves what the voters were saying and thinking. They too learned a lot about life at Jim and Lou’s.
I have fond memories and will never forget my education at Jim and Lou’s Bar. It’s the way it was in the neighborhood.
October 21st, 2008 at 11:55 amOk Barga, I just took the step you obviously overlooked and went to their website where it says on the frontpage that they DO NOT support Obama…and…explain where the rumor came from!
One would think that if you had a question as to what a group was doing, you might try checking with them instead of going everyplace for information except for the group in question!
Kind of like if you wanted information about cats…would you scour every site pertaining to dogs for this information?
October 21st, 2008 at 1:51 pm“The Vill,” at least plat 3 where I live, is largely supporting Obama. I guess fewer racist white Jewish rich folk are living in Ottawa Hills, and a more “diverse” citizenry is moving in.
I have commented before that O.H. is the most diverse school district my kids have attended, including TPS, Toledo Catholic, and a public district south of Dayton. However, that diversity is based on all races not just black v. white; and many resident will celebrate an Obama victory.
I see apparent conflicting signs in the village, not only both presidential candidates (some mutiny within the family) but yards with McCain signs and Vote yes on levies signs. I guess not all people can be a clear headed and consistent as TAHL.
If Obama were to lose (less likely now that Powell has endorsed him) the cry of racism would be loud, long and unfortunately in some places violent. But if he wins, those who have made political and economic hay by supporting the racial divide and keeping the politics of division and fear alive will argue that his presidency is not proof of how far we have come, but they will continue to find ways to rely on race as one of the bases for their platforms to prevent minorities from voting Republican.
The real issue is no longer who wins on Nov. 4th, but who will address and stop the threat of socialism – pure and conspicuous- we are facing. I believe Obama will make this slide of fate faster than McCain, but neither will stand to stop it as is necessary.
When re-election for the Senate and House come along – remember the votes on the bail out, and send every YES vote home without a job in Washington, including John Boehner and Voinovich. Much like other terms they don’t agree with, marriage, recession, tax-cut, when liberals don’t like a word – they simply re-define it. So the bail out is not “socialism” its something else, what, they can’t tell us.
Government control of the financial system and market is — Russia 1950-1986, PERIOD!
TAHL
October 21st, 2008 at 5:39 pmWhat is a Black Nazi? Isn’t that kind of an oxymoron? Is that article supposed to be satire?
Bishop, the article you link also mentions a “Millions More Whites” march in Toledo, and I have no recollection of this ever happening.
If cars are being burned and neighborhoods destroyed, I think anyone in their right mind would call it a “riot” and not just a “protest”. Maybe a “violent protest”.
October 21st, 2008 at 6:32 pmIf some blacks believe that Obama is going to only represent them they are the ignorant ones. Obama is for all ppl not just one race of ppl. I can say in the three zip codes I frequent I have only seen 3 Mccain/Palin signs. I take this to mean: Some don’t want their sign stolen. some don’t want anyone to know who they are voting for and some don’t care for either candidate and don’t care. I know enough white male rebublicians over 50 who will vote for Obama because of Mccains age and some because they cant see Palin waiting in the wings to be President. There are spouses who are not voting for the same candidate. I was going to vote for Hillary but she turned so bossy and hit under the belt that she just turned me off. I could not imagine her meeting with Prime Ministers or other Leaders of other Countries taking her (as a strong woman) seriously. I am voting for Obama because it is my vote. I like his age. Palin is someone I would love to hang out with but not be apart of leading Our Country. Does it really matter who gets in The White House right now. My unborn grandchilden will be affected due to the bailout. Whoever gets in will only be in for their first term. Four years is not enough time to clean this mess up. This war is far from over. My only son is in hiding. LOL. I do hope that whoever gets the job gives Hillary something to do. I now like her again and she is a asset.
October 21st, 2008 at 6:51 pmSepp, if the KKK said that they liked black people would you believe it?
October 21st, 2008 at 10:25 pmNo Barga because it runs counter to their beliefs…just like supporting Obama does too.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:26 pmBut, like I said 10 times already, why don’t you just ask them? I’m sure they probably have an e-mail address where you could pose your question directly…or just keep looking like a fool!
Your choice.
Actually, Sepp, it doesn’t. Notice that they are willing to put aside their beliefs when they think that doing so gets them further (their relationship with the Islamic militant movement, the alliance with the black nation, etc.)
Again, i said they support him, not endorse. They can not say whom they support loudly as it would make large waves. However, if the leaders (as indicated by SPLC) feel one way, the assumption is that the group does
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:25 amAlexis de Tocqueville, the great French political philosopher, once said, “The surface of American society is covered with a layer of democratic paint, but from time to time one can see the old aristocratic colors breaking through.” Although that quote was first spoken several decades ago, it seems fresh to the ears, ringing true nationwide during this election. In this case, we have elected government officials and hopefuls, for some reason or another, who have at least claimed that cash advances are damaging to the American people. Some have even gone as far as to propose devastating measures that would wipe out the entire industry in some states, or even the whole country! Ohio Governor Ted Strickland is one of the people supporting these initiatives. He is on the move to pass Ohio’s HB 545, which will, in fact, destroy the industry and leave about 6,000 of his people unemployed. Even worse, both Presidential candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain supported a bill that ultimately banned payday loans to military personnel. In addition to that, Obama is supporting related propositions that will make it almost impossible for short-term lenders to continue operating. Let’s continue our concentrated effort to keep those aristocratic colors from breaking through while we fight not only for the good fate of payday loans, but for our rights to financial freedom.

Yes Barga, you’re right. The KKK always gives the SPLC a heads up when they are planning to do the exact opposite of what they say their plan is!
Or maybe the SPLC after so many years of running counter to the KKK has just gotten lazy and simply issues a statement that is a contridiction anything they say regardless of the subject.
Here, i snoped it for you
October 30th, 2008 at 8:28 amhttp://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/kkk.asp
I assume that SPLC did a fact check and did not use a satirical paper as their source, nice strawman though
That said, The SPLC has far more sources then either of us, and, frankly, I trust them
October 30th, 2008 at 8:48 amYeah you “ASSUMED” as opposed to to what? Checking with the KKK themselves, snoping it, conventional wisdom, using common sense? Why not just send the KKK an e-mail and ask them yourself?
October 30th, 2008 at 11:51 amBut, after re-reading your post…It’s just a blog article on the SPLC website! It’s pure conjecture! Meaning that ANYONE could post that!
Get it? A blog! It’s an oppinion piece full of speculation about “why” it would be celebrated if Obama was elected for the KKK!
The SPLC isn’t officially saying anything about the KKK supporting Obama…maybe YOU should go back and reread the BLOG article because it’s more of a “what if” than a “what is”.
Of course, going direct to the KKK site that states right on the front page that “The Obama support rumor is a hoax” was far beyond your grasp since it only takes .10th of a second to find the information and a zeal for the truth instead of internet rumors that simply feed an agenda.
Of course that’s only typical of your generation and your politics. The alternate viewpoint is never credible enough as the make-believe rumors no matter how far-fetched.
Sure you have a great conspiracy theory…meaning that the KKK hopes Obama is elected just so he can fuck everything up and prove their point but, sorry dude, it’s only a conspiracy theory! The KKK thenselves have debunked it.
So put your tinfoil hat back on, get back into the closet, turn on your Star Trek DVD and wait until your mom calls you to dinner!
As you may have heard, Barack Obama’s grandmother Madelyn Dunham died on Sunday, November 2nd. Obama didn’t receive the news until Monday, the 3rd—just one day prior to Election Day. Luckily for Obama, he had the opportunity to see his grandmother “Toot” in late October. He called her Toot, his shorthand for “tutu,” a Hawaiian term for grandparent. It doesn’t change that Toot’s death couldn’t have come at a worse time for Obama. The death of a loved one is hard enough as it is; it always seems to happen at the worst time in life—when you’re extremely busy and money is tight. Affording travel costs and funeral costs can be so overwhelming and sometimes impossible. Who needs something else to worry about in that kind of situation? That’s why you should check out short term installment loans if you’re ever faced with the costs associated with losing a loved one. Installment loans can help reduce stress in an already overly-stressful situation.
