The Truth: Pushing voting and Jack’s back thinking McCain might win…
One of the reasons I read the Sojourner’s Truth each week and blog about some of the stories written here to encourage you to read it is because I think it’s important that every part of our community have a voice and that we as a whole community even when we don’t agree, at least listen. It’s also why I read La Prensa and a variety of other newspapers as often as I can.
It dawned on me today that I have not done my job when it comes to pointing out that the Truth is biased too, the newspaper from an editorial position has supported Obama for quite some time, this omission was directly related to an acceptance of the assumption that it was expected that a paper designed for an African American audience would support Obama. It doesn’t change my still believing that this newspaper does provide insight into topics not covered in the other local media, but if I’m going to be fair in pointing out selectivity and bias, I’d be remiss in not stating that it’s clear who this newspaper is supporting. If there was any doubt, this week’s “This Strikes Us” focusing on the “Seven Days to Change the World” would be a dead give away, not by mention of Obama but by what is written about the Republican Party. I do however note that it was refreshing to see a newspaper state in print the realization of how little impact a president can have on the economy:
In the matter of education and the economy, we usually ask that the administration and the entire federal government simply do no harm.
Though I’m not sure all would agree with that on the topic of education, especially given the recent campaign focus on Education from the Obama campaign.
Before we get to Former Mayor Jack Ford, another article caught my attention that I recommend reading, on the anniversary of the Springfield Race riots. Some may not know that this riot was what led to the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. There are also some additional links in the article if you want to learn more. There is also a good article by Fletcher Word on the The Greenhouse Project.
Now on to former Mayor Jack Ford being back to writing My View, he’d been absent for a few weeks, and as always he focuses on more than just one theme in his column. As promised in the headline, his thoughts concerning the upcoming election:
We should be troubled by the continued inability of Senator Barack Obama to put away Senator John McCain. As a matter of fact, McCain is ahead in Ohio today and dead even in Michigan. In light of the War in Iraq and the economy, Obama should be way ahead. I will not be surprised that come November, McCain may eke out a slim victory.
For all its hi-tech strategies and huge crowds, the Obama campaign seems stuck in park. We saw in 2000 and 2004 what can happen if we give the right an opportunity to steal an election. We should stop worrying about whether Gov. Sarah Palin is this or that and focus on getting out the vote – GOTV.
Where is the sense of urgency in the community? I just don’t feel it. I hope we are not mesmerized by the hoopla and large crowds.
Considering the problems from a customer service end that have been previously noted, maybe what Ford mentions in his column as to the possibility of the State taking over EOPA should happen, it’d be hard to see how people could be served worse than they are right now. He also weighs in on the United Way saga:
Bill Kitson is the CEO of the Greater Toledo United Way. He is now in the crosshairs of The Blade, Carty and the County Commissioners. Will the United Way building be torn down, as Kitson wants? Remember, Carty has influence over the Zoning Board by means of his appointees. Kitson has asked for supporters of United Way to step forward and argue their case using logic.
The problem arises in that logic has little sway in Toledo when certain actors get into the game.
Good luck, Bill. You’re gonna need it.

September 18th, 2008 at 3:00 pmGod help us all if McCain wins by using his sleazy Rove tactics to eke out a victory! McCain’s ambition to become President has tarnished his “media image” as a straight talker and a man of integrity. He looks like a man who will say whatever it takes and authorize whatever it takes (ie push polls). A continuation of the Bush Administration. I fear the country cannot take it anymore.
September 18th, 2008 at 5:07 pmI enjoy reading the Truth weekly….
My perception was that Mr. Ford was the biggest “do nothing” elected official in history……sadly, that remains true today…..if only he was out and about more…..who knows?
My perception is that Mr. Ford has more character on his left hand than the current mayor has in his in his whole body…..it is not even close……our current mayor is a joke…that is not funny.
September 18th, 2008 at 6:01 pmThe democrats should be afraid of losing. Gore had socialist agenda in his platform, Kerry had socialist agenda in his platform and, were rejected.
September 18th, 2008 at 6:20 pmSo when Obama takes no hint from history and runs even further to the left with his platform he risks even more defectors from the party.
The democrats should have moved to a more centrist platform 8 years ago and ditched the marxists within the party.
Even Bill Clinton was liberal but, his platform wasn’t socialism and he appealed to a larger spectrum of voters than Obama ever will because of it.
Tom you’re right on about Ford and Carty.
September 18th, 2008 at 6:27 pmJ-Fo was a sad excuse for a mayor…until about 6 months before the election. Then he became Super-Mayor and tried to play catch-up for 4 years of lost time in doing things.
Had he been so active over his entire 4 years, he’d have been reelected without a doubt.
McCAIN-PALIN 2008
September 18th, 2008 at 7:02 pmTom – that is just not true.
Jack was a GREAT legislator in Columbus. He was the House Minority Leader, and that ain’t no hay ! He could bring people together.
His problem was that he did not make a very good strong mayor. He probably would have done fantastic with a city manager.
September 18th, 2008 at 7:28 pmSepp – Was Gore’s agenda rejected? I seem to recall that he received more popular votes in the 2000 election. Oh…I remember…his agenda was rejected by the Republican controlled Supreme Court ny a vote of 5-4.
September 18th, 2008 at 8:32 pmThat 5-4 vote simply ended the endless recounts. After recounting the vote 10 times and still losing it was getting pretty stupid to just keep counting them over and over.
Either way, this election promises to be one of the best soap operas ever.
September 19th, 2008 at 3:27 amSepp…6 months before….how true….my car was rocked by the same speed bump on Secor Rd. for 4(d) years until just before the election…when it was leveled….but it was too late.
el…..never knew what went on in Columbus…next to no coverage in the daily local on JF at the time….while mayor tho….not good….he learned about OI departure from the Blade….not good. Perception, perception…..
mike….Gore was “rejected” by his own “peeps”….Tenn. said No Way…they knew better….he was “born and raised” to be President…but he didn’t have it in him….perhaps 8 years with the Big He was just too much….BJ Clinton still doesn’t know what “character” is…Also, every news org. in the country did a recount of Fla. votes….with the same result….the Supremes just put a bullet in the down horse….to get it over with.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:14 amOh ya….this time….Sarah is “my man!” I don’t like JMc. for so many reasons…..help us Lord….but not with BHO….who is he anyway??
Lots of dead people voted in ‘60….they probably will again….seat belts fastened?
September 19th, 2008 at 4:19 amI try and read The Truth when I can, usually from a link from GCJ. But this issue raises some problems for me.
“had the U.S. Supreme Court not interfered to stop another recount, Al Gore might have gone over the top and the course of history could have been remarkably different.”
How can “The Truth” and politically educated persons continue to spew falsehoods about Florida, the Supreme Court, and the 2000 election? National popular vote aside (which has never been the measure of presidential elections in America) is has been proven and confirmed by liberal left leaning media that President Bush won Florida in numerous re-counts.
The Supreme Court’s role is misunderstood and repeatedly falsely described by those who don’t know the facts.
Also, who edited this article.
“What are those three critical issues? Health care, energy and foreign policy – issues on which the federal government can have a direct impact immediately and in the long term. Why do we not include education or energy on the list?”
I’m pretty sure energy is on the first list. Sorry to seem petty, but if your going to make sweeping generalizations about the facts of an election and policy – at least do so cogently.
TAHL
September 19th, 2008 at 10:01 amTAHL, I think the second line is supposed to read, “Why do we not include education or economy
energyon the list?” Since energy is listed as one of the three, and economy is mentioned in the next sentence with education. “In the matter of education and the economy, we usually ask that the administration and the entire federal government simply do no harm.” I had to read that more than once before it made sense to me.I don’t disagree with you that the Supreme Courts role in the election has almost reached urban myth proportions. The *evil* republican role is try to steal the election one way and the *evil* democrat role is to try to steal it another, the truth lies in the middle as always though very few seem to remove their partisan blinders to see it.
