SaysMeTv claims they are not partisan…

24 Sep 2008

I’ve been getting unsolicited emails from a company called SaysMe TV Here is the first one that I received with what is in bold was the subject line:

www.OhioSavesAmerica.com – a new way to help Obama

www.OhioSavesAmerica.com

you can run your own ads on tv.. the last 5 seconds will read “Paid for by: YOUR NAME”

tell your friends to watch

pick the cable network… time slot… ad… and zip code…

For $100 you can run 6-7 ads in Ohio… be the difference for Obama…

Then the very next day I received this one – bold again is the subject line of the email:

www.OhioSavesAmerica.com – a new way to help Obama

Same basic content of the email text above.

I went online and looked at their website where they claim that they are not partisan, here is the screen shot from that section:

saysmetv.jpg

When you visit the Ohio Saves America site that was created by Says Me Tv, it’s impossible to state this is non-partisan:

There are 40 days until Election Day. You don’t want to wake up on November 5th and have John McCain as your President. Four more years of war. Four more years of a declining economy. Four more years of insufficient health care and neglect for Americans everywhere. Four more years of failure, embarrassment, and inefficiency.

Ohio Saves America is registered by:

Sunshine Direct the same company that owns SayMe Tv.
3524 Barry Avenue
Los Angeles, California 90066
United States

I wrote Brendan Biryla, pointed out to him that what he was sending was not only unsolicited, but that if his company was claiming to be non-partisan the emails he was sending out gave a different impression. I asked him to remove my email from the list. He never responded…Now this morning, to more than one of my email accounts came this email with the subject line in bold:

Incredibly damaging video of Sarah Palin!

It’s not incredibly damaging, it’s incredibly misleading. They took a few seconds of this speech that is out there that Palin gave to the Alaskan Independence Party Statewide Convention March 2008, this is the original video:

And then turned it into this:

Calling Sarah Palin a “strong supporter” is a bit of a stretch and it’s one of those rumors out there that Fact Check has weighed in on.

Now…If you really want Obama to be elected? Don’t waste your money on organizations that a) lie about being non partisan, b) spam you with emails and misleading ads and c) will profit from you in what is clearly an attempt to help them more than the actual candidate. If you want to donate to Obama? Do it directly. I have no idea if they are targeting people that they think are McCain supporters or not. If you want to donate directly to McCain? Go to his website or if you are saying the hell with both of them? Bob Barr or McKinney or Nader would be glad to accept your donations. These campaigns are much better served by direct donations that they can decide where they need it most.

That’s without even going into the questions that could be raised concerning Federal Elections Law.

    Jari Says:

SaysMe.tv is neutral, at the company there are people reaching out both sides. and there is Pro-McCain material on there.

If you register at “McCain Space” there are discussion forums about saysme

  2. 2
    Jari Says:

furthermore.. the ads are produced by 3 party individuals/companies.

also, SaysMe.tv does’t run the ads on tv.. users run the ads so it really doesn’t matter what their company position is.

They’re good people, and this article is definitely a step backwards from progress and free speech

    LisaRenee Says:

I realize you are from the company Jari, so if you could then explain what’s written at the “Ohio Saves America” website that was created by your company, is “neutral” or “non-partisan” that would be great.

If you could also explain why my email wasn’t important enough to respond or act on when I asked to please stop receiving unsolicited emails, that would also be great too.

    LisaRenee Says:

I’d also point out that the video that you are saying was made by a third party group, bears no information that suggests that. It’s listed on YouTube by: From: wwwsaysmetv Added: September 23, 2008 and at the very end the ad states, “Take the next step. Get this video seen on TV”.

There’s no disclaimer that states you are non-partisan or that this video was made by someone else…That’s a bit misleading.

As a p.s. I don’t think telling the truth is against being progressive. Nothing posted here is a lie, the majority of it is from your own companies websites and/or emails that were sent to me.

    Jari-

Thank you for supporting free speech with me. SAYSME.TV is cutting edge. Who cares if Saysme bought the website. I’m sure it was done for a reason. I maxed out my donations already. I believe that running political ads in swing states is the most effective thing to do to win the undecided vote and I’ll tell you why. THE CAMPAIGN IS DOING THE SAME THING!!! Saysme is playing the politics card, obviously, and the truth is some day they will be looked at as true visionaries. I found SaysMe other places…Looks like you didn’t do all of your homework.

Ok so I applaud you for playing the role of the left wing blogger who tries to pull the curtain in search for the wizard. How’s this for non partisan- I’m a libertarian. I run ads on issues I believe in using SaysMe. The rules have been rewritten because we are living in the internet age. SaysMe raises the bar to the individual and I have to tip my hat. What they are doing is 100% legal. I wouldn’t be involved if they weren’t. Don’t take the fun out of new toys. Don’t be the old lady who yells, “Turn that TV down!” Welcome 2008

I have been trying to get Ron Paul on board with this concept. Anyone else think he’d like it?

    LisaRenee Says:

“Jonathan” – do you understand what an “ip” address is? You’ve posted this comment from the exact same ip address that Jari used to post here. You guys are really not impressing me with your honesty, at all….

  8. 8
    Jari Says:

all of what your saying is true Lisa no one is saying your wrong about SaysMe except that we are non-partisan, we have content from both sides and offer our services to both sides (yes if you look at the youtube channel you will see Pro-McCain stuff as well)

you are clearly wrong and in time you will see this

  9. 9
    LisaRenee Says:

Jari, I doubt in time I will ever think that:

There are 40 days until Election Day. You don’t want to wake up on November 5th and have John McCain as your President. Four more years of war. Four more years of a declining economy. Four more years of insufficient health care and neglect for Americans everywhere. Four more years of failure, embarrassment, and inefficiency.

Is a non-partisan statement. Nor will I ever believe that promoting ads that are misleading without a proper disclaimer are proper.

    Jari Says:

that video you have posted was on Fox News all this week, its not like a breaking story.. the breaking story is the fact that everyone reading this right now can actually run this ad on tv

    its true..

    Brendan Says:

    This is great stuff…

Lisa, we could easily launch a site for you if you’re a republican, it matters not to us… the only thing that matters is that people have an avenue to get their voice on TV.

    Best,

    -Brendan

  12. 12
    LisaRenee Says:

Jari, it’d be nice if you would actually address the questions asked, but if you want to believe that promoting something that’s been revealed through fact check is an accomplish for free speech? It’s clear we have a difference in definitions.

I’m sure that people are intelligent enough to read what was sent by emails, visit the website, read your companies disclaimer and read the comments here as well as the attempt to have someone come here and pretend to be a supporter who’s posting from your ip address for what it is.

  13. 13
    LisaRenee Says:

Brendan, I’m not a republican. Nor am I interested as I wrote to you via email. It’s nice that you took the time to stop by. Now maybe you’ll actually remove my email addresses from your list?

  14. 14
    Brendan Says:

you can remove yourself from the Obama site.. it’s an open listserv

also, Jari was brought into SaysMe to reach out to liberal bloggers, and we have people on the other side as well. It’s been the case that the liberals are more keen to take advantage of this technology… clearly you haven’t and thats why I ask if you’re a republican.

  15. 15
    LisaRenee Says:

There was no option to unsubscribe Brendan and I’m never “keen” on things that are misleading. I’m one of those old fashion liberals that prefers the truth over games.

The fact that you hired someone to reach out to liberal bloggers and then had one of you come here and pretend to be a supporter who was really just one of you? Was pretty silly. Most credible bloggers kind of take issue with that kind of pretense…

  16. 16
    neighborhood concerns Says:

The underlying motivation to the saysme site, would be money, isn’t?

  17. 17
    LisaRenee Says:

Yeppers, they make money from running the ads, unless I’ve missed their non-profit organization status.

  18. 18
    Jonathan Swift Says:

did you find the wizard yet?

    -JS

“seek the truth and the truth will set you free”

you’re on to something and you’re soooo close. What if he was “hired” because Jari has enough money to buy ads and change the election but he wanted tell people about it?

  19. 19
    Daniel Jack Williamson Says:

Lisa Renee, you are absolutely right. The Sarah Palin smear has been debunked by FactCheck.

Also, you are absolutely right, the first spam e-mail from this organization is an invitation to help Obama. I received 3 identical solicitations from this group, and each offered a way for me to sponsor an Obama ad on TV in Ohio.

  20. 20
    Brendan Says:

we only came here because Google Alerts told us that you had posted something about us. Today’s business world demands that you have people out there in the blogosphere… 90% of the news these days is broken online.. like any good PR agency you have to be ahead of the curve and make sure you are not slandering our company or clients.

Since you clearly are.. and are being unreasonably difficult we’re going to move onto people who really want to make a difference.. I will leave you with a great article about us from the NY Times:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/18/business/media/18link.html?ex=1376712000&en=40dd2ccb3b0078d2&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

“SaysMe marks a new dawn for free speech and citizen participation in American Politics.”

    -Bradley Smith, Former FEC Chairman

  21. 21
    Emily Says:

SaysMe is nonpartisan but created a website called OhioSavesAmerica.com which is in support of Obama.

Political spam – better or worse than the *other* spam?

  22. 22
    LisaRenee Says:

Yes, Brendan I am difficult. I like facts, and I don’t like it when people lie or play games. I read the NY Times article, and I’ve actually emailed the reporter the link to this thread so they can see first hand how great you guys are!

  23. 23
    neighborhood concerns Says:

    From the article;

“We want to be the place for people to air their grievances, promote their products or beliefs,” Ms. Eisenpresser said. “Come see my kid’s school play, buy my car, protect a women’s right to choose.”

Start up in search of being bought by someone….

    chrismyers Says:

I guess the company does not reach out to Internet Terrorists. Too bad.

    http://www.saysme.tv/static/company

Founded by long-standing Internet and Media entrepreneurs, Lisa Eisenpresser, Morgan Warstler, John O. Morisano and outdoor advertising pioneer, Bill Apfelbaum, the company began under the banner of Sunshine Direct

Interesting about some of the people on the company.

    http://www.flippingfrenzy.com/2006/02/

“For the next 10 minutes or so–yeah, they sucker-punched me into watching more than I intended (it was just ’so’ compelling)–Eisenpresser and her off-camera narrator provide ‘does-it-really-work’ commentary, while Dawn and a whole slew of people provide testimonial after testimonial to the power of Dwan’s system for turning a $10 real estate-related deposit into a $10,000 real estate-related profit in 30-days or less.”

    Is this legal?

Donors who have reached the maximum $2,300 campaign contribution can buy ads using SaysMe.TV to “their heart’s content,” according to the venture’s CEO and co-founder, Lisa Eisenpresser. Plus, the company pays a royalty to whoever creates the commercial.

    Maybe more in a bit….

  27. 27
    LisaRenee Says:

Yes, Chris that is the same company, I read quite a bit about them while I was researching this post. That’s how I knew Jari worked for the company even though she did not identify herself as an employee, her name and email address was out there.

  28. 28
    LisaRenee Says:

Thanks Kate! I’ll update if I get a response from the New York Times reporter.

    -Sepp Says:

“I’m one of those old fashion liberals that prefers the truth over games.”

And sadly Lisa, that style of liberalism is getting rare.

  30. 30
    LisaRenee Says:

True Sepp but you know everything comes back into style again, so there’s still hope.

  31. 31
    -Sepp Says:

I’m not holding my breath. The “new” liberalism is a complete distortion of what old-skool liberals used to be. My Dad is an old-skooler and even he gets blown away by some of the extremists who call themselves liberals and haven’t an ounce of common sense. At one time, liberalism had a lot to with freedom, liberty and, fairness…and by “fairness” I mean everyone getting an even shot at their goals according to what they put into getting to them.
Today’s liberal thought has flipped all those ideals upside down and contrast greatly with what a liberal used to be.

  32. 32
    LisaRenee Says:

It can be discouraging, I get tired of being a target with people constantly trying to either get me to quit in frustration or brow beat me into submission.

However, I have learned who really believes in what I believe, and who only gives it lip service.

    Accurate and excellent.
And completely foreign to “mainstream progressives” toay.

    Warner Todd Huston Says:

Well, from the initial posting to the obfuscation and lies the website operators have added in the comments, I do believe that the original post is 100% correct in wondering why the site claims to be “non-partisan” and then has directly partisan, anti-Republican rhetoric all over the place.

Good job Lisa. You get stars for being honest and sincere. SaysMeTV gets a lump of coal in its stocking.

Nice research, Lisa…I’ve forwarded this to some of my ‘free-market’ blogger friends because I think they’ll appreciate the work you’ve put into finding out what’s really going on.

Thanks also, for being consistent in your ‘truth over games’ philosophy…it’s much appreciated and admired.
