TFP: Smoke on the Water, The Joker and more…

28 Jul 2008

The upcoming Smoke on the Water event is the cover story for the Toledo Free Press, with most of the Arts and Life category featuring information about the upcoming event and the cover story article, Ribs and music cook for the Red Cross.

I haven’t seen the “The Dark Knight” yet, but after reading Michael Miller’s piece, Smile and Karl Rundgren’s Why So Serious I’m more intrigued as to how I will view Heath Ledger’s performance.

Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop has a guest piece in this week’s Toledo Free Press, entitled, 6,174, it expands on an earlier press release discussed here about the voting record of his two fellow Commissioners. Thomas Pounds expresses concern over the lack of momentum on the intermodal that was a hot topic of discussion not long ago.

This week’s Blog it is joined by quite a few great Exclusively online articles, my focus is on blogging the Boob Tube.

As a light hearted aside, I hope that the 106.5 The Zone’s Murphy in the Morning contest to find a rib judge for Smoke on the Water creates a win for a woman. It seems as if women are not being represented in the judging capacity. I teased one judge that another type of pig, “chauvinist pig” came to mind considering women just like men, love good barbeque…

Rundgren and Miller both recognized just how incredible was the performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker. I’m not a comic book fan, and I avoid a lot of the super-hero screen adaptations, but even I shuddered at times at the blend of evil/anarchy/insanity that Ledger created in this character.

Well worth even the exorbitant $10-$12 being charged these days for a first-run film.

My favorite Joker scene was when he was dressed up in the nurse’s outfit and visited the burned Harvey Dent in the hospital:

“Do I really look like a man with a plan, Harvey? I don’t have a plan. The mob has plans, the cops have plans. you know what I am, Harvey? I’m like a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to DO with one if I caught one!

I just DO things. I’m a wrench in the gears. I HATE plans. Yours, theirs, everyone’s. Maroni has plans, Gordon has plans. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I am not a schemer. I show schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So when I say that what happened to you and your girlfriend wasn’t personal, you know I’M telling the truth.”

You don’t know whether to laugh or run screaming when Heath Ledger’s Joker tosses off lines like this.

I saw “The Dark Knight” just yesterday. A couple of my all time favorite actors are Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. I never heard of Heath Ledger before he had a roll in this movie.

Oh, man… what a total psycho nut-job he made The Joker out to be. Freaky acting. You could hear others in the theater crowd gasp at some of the lines he delivers. Great movie. (You don’t have to be a big comic book movie fan to appreciate the roll he played).

My hubby saw the Batman movie at the opening midnight show. He absolutely loved it! This is one movie that we will definitely pick up, when it comes out on DVD.
