First Day of Caring by Lucas County Employees

25 Jul 2008

This in via email from the office of Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop:

Lucas County to Host First Day of Caring Over 60 Lucas County workers volunteer to support Cherry Street Ministries

Over 60 Lucas County employees and their families are spending their Saturday to show just how much Lucas County Cares. County employees will be volunteering at Cherry Street Ministries for the day assisting staff and clients at all of the Ministries’ five locations. Employees will be doing various tasks including refurbishing the old Banner Manner Warehouse, tutoring clients for the GED, preparing meals and organizing the Ministries’ donations.

“This Day of Caring is a chance for Lucas County employees to show they are public servants even outside their normal jobs,” said Commissioner Konop.

The Lucas County Cares Program was coordinated by the county’s Volunteer Council led by Commissioner Ben Konop. Partnering with the United Way of Greater Toledo’s Volunteer Center, Lucas County will host three Days of Caring annually. Lucas County is the first local government in Ohio to host Day of Caring events.

“Recent studies have shown that volunteer time is worth almost $20/hour. Knowing this, Lucas County Cares is not only an investment in employee camaraderie; it’s also an investment in our community’s future,” he concluded.

In addition to volunteering, Lucas County employees also held food and clothing drives and donated money throughout the month of July to benefit Cherry Street Ministries.

Organizing items donated to the Cherry Street Mission is the way I understood that.

It sure was! Off-topic, I am really enjoying your blog. You consistently maintain a good Mama approach as a Webmaster (allow certain freedoms, but ready to REEL us in when boundaries are crossed).

Toledo does care. My kids think that Toledo is boring and after college they will not reside here. Toledo has many great places to visit. We have The Toledo Zoo, a beautiful art museum, (I want Cosi back)great restaurants, not all are on Monroe street but many are downtown. I love to go to a Mud Hens game with the kids and their friends. Toledo is not too fast paced that I can’t keep up. Is Toledo boring? Nope. We in Toledo really do care. Nice to see our county employees giving their time to help out at The Cherry Street Mission. Nicer that it is not on company time but on their own time. It is always nice to know that ppl do give back and do not expect anything in return. Pay It Foward.

Gee, I did 35 years of volunteer work in numerous community activities while I was a Lucas County employee and while on my own time.
No County Commissioner ever sent out any press releases for my volunteer activities.
Golly, maybe it was because I did it as a concerned individual rather than as a political pawn.
    Gosh, I hope I don’t offend anyone.

It’s kind of nice to see that county employees are willing to donate their time. And it’s also a nice way to know that this facility exists.
