FBI investigates Lucas County Sheriffs Department
NBC24’s Aaron Brilbeck has the story about the 2004 death of Carleton Benton who took an overdose of drugs taken while in custody and they’ve learned that the FBI is investigating. It was stated in 2004 that an investigation was going to be done locally but it’s now being reported that was never done:
“I will be referring all this to I.A.,” administrator Richard Keller told us back in 2004. “Internal investigation.”
But Tuesday when we asked for a copy of the results of that internal investigation, we were told one was never conducted.
Additional confirmation as to the media being told an investigation was going to take place can be found in the Blade archives from June 3, 2004:
Inmate accused of killing relatives has seizures, dies
A North Toledo man accused of murdering his paralyzed cousin and his cousin’s wife earlier this year died Tuesday, and the Lucas County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices are investigating his death. Carlton L. Benton, 25, died at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where he was taken Sunday after a Lucas County jail corrections officer found him in his cell not breathing. He had just returned from the hospital, where he was taken Friday after suffering seizures,
I believe that this story becoming public is a result of a disgruntled former Sherriff’s department employee who was fired, then vowed to get back at the department by blowing the whistle on this case. Not sure if the case itself has any merit, but it surely could threaten Telb’s bid for re-election if anything is out of order. Look for alternative candidates to start lining up. Chief Navarre?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:07 pmChief Navarre would be an ideal Sheriff; his honesty, integrity and work ethic would be welcome. That being said; he would need YEARS to raise that mess to the same level of professionalism he has brought to the TPD.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:56 pmJimmy, you must not work for or, know anyone who works for TPD. I’ve yet to meet a cop who has anything good to say about Carty’s lapdog Navarre.
Telb should have been gone years ago. The LCJ is a madhouse run by the inmates and is riddled with incompetence.
Inmates released “by mistake” 3 times.
A loaded gun smuggled to an inmate by staff!
Twice in 2 years staff nailed for smuggling drugs into the jail!
Imates who escape at the hospital!
And it goes on and on!
July 16th, 2008 at 11:35 pmJimmy, from the little bit of the Primetime program regarding the young girls held by the prostitution ring to shown this Friday night, Navarre doesn’t look to competent. There were many 911 calls placed to the Toledo Police Department. The father or uncle of one of the girls went in there to rescue them. He ended up getting badly beaten in the process. Where were the police?
July 17th, 2008 at 9:45 amNavarre is a horrible chief. His level of incompetence is truly amazing. His response to the Primetime program was to blame the media. Unbelievable. He still has yet to say what he thought were the higher priorities for those 93 minutes. This is even more evidence to prove that Navarre is another one of this city’s embarrassments.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:52 amMaybe Jackie (shotgun) Smith, would be a good candidate for Sheriff, he’s known as a no nonsense cops type of cop. Afterall, he has about 106 days leading the TPD.
