Toledo Lawmaker Recognized for Advocacy of Military Causes

COLUMBUS – Three separate veteran’s organizations are honoring State Representative Peter Ujvagi (D-Toledo) with prestigious awards to recognize his tireless advocacy on behalf of military members and their families.

This past Saturday, the Vietnam Veterans of America – Buckeye State Council presented Rep. Ujvagi with its “Veteran Advocacy Award of the Year” for his advocacy of issues that affect active, retired, injured and fallen soldiers in Ohio. This follows the “Ohio Distinguished Service Award Medal” Rep. Ujvagi received in April from the Ohio Adjutant General for his body of legislative work since 2003 on behalf of veterans.

Next month, the Veteran’s Service Commission will honor Rep. Ujvagi with its “Advocacy of the Year Award.”

“To say I am honored by this recognition is an understatement; I am humbled because of the sacrifice these military members and their families make in the name of our freedom,” Rep. Ujvagi said. “I am, as ever, in awe of their commitment to our country and our citizens. The least I can do as a legislator is protect them and their interests at home so they have the peace of mind of knowing that their state is taking care of them as they serve in the most dangerous of places.”

Rep. Ujvagi’s accomplishments in the General Assembly include:

Exempting military retirement pay from the personal income tax
Prohibiting discrimination in housing, workplace (hiring/firing, promotion), health care, etc. because of military status
Extending tuition waivers for spouses of service members killed in combat
Preventing a family court from using military status against a parent during child custody proceedings

Rep. Ujvagi still has many projects in progress to help veterans, including legislation that:

Provides two weeks of unpaid leave for any spouse/parent of a military member who is called to active duty or is injured, wounded, or hospitalized while serving in a combat zone
Freezes taxes on primary residences owned and occupied by low-income disabled veterans
Grants paid leave for state employees to participate in a funeral honors detail
Compensate employers for hardships when National Guard/Reservists members are deployed

“The work of our military is never done, so our work on their behalf cannot be finished, either,” Rep. Ujvagi said. “I will keep working with members on both sides of the aisle to win support for measures that protect those who protect us. Our servicemen and women and their families stand on the front lines of the fight for freedom, and they deserve our very best efforts everyday.”
