Gloria Steinem, Alternative energy, Blame the iPod & Blog it Toledo…This week’s TFP
This week’s cover story in the Toledo Free Press was one that immediately drew me in, Steinem: Toledo time ‘important, valuable’ with a second piece, Classmates remember Steinem’s Toledo days. Gloria Steinem and Shirley Chisholm were two women who had a strong impact on me in my early years, being one of those who does believe:
that feminism is about the ability to choose what’s right at each time of our lives
Dan Johnson has a guest piece this week on Alternative Energy and the possibilities for Toledo that I recommend reading. He makes some great suggestions I’d love to see discussed. I can’t offer Michael Miller advice from a male perspective on To V or not to V except to relate that men that I personally know did not experience any “backup pressure.” Karl Rundgren blames the iPod and as one of those who hasn’t gotten one yet, I’m almost afraid too now. My kids all have them but I’ve resisted…
Back to a more serious note, Dr. Lloyd Jacobs has a guest piece on “UT protects gay rights” while reassuring, it could be questioned where UT draws the line on free speech. Crystal Dixon was suspended from her position in the associate vice president of human resources because of a letter she wrote to the Toledo Free Press. While I don’t agree with what she stated previously, should she have the right to express her feelings or does the fact she’s employed in HR make this a situation where her statements now public, matter.
There is much more in this week’s Toledo Free Press including Wilkowski: ‘I’d like to be the mayor’ which could be said is more than just a fantasy. However if you are looking for fantasy moments, this week’s Blog it! Toledo awaits you as well as some other great exclusively online items that you don’t want to miss. Angela Wallington Zimmann is the Brain Gain person and even sex are waiting online for you to read about.
One country step towards alernative energy and carbon free and waste free.
“Foster + Partners is designing the world’s first zero-carbon, zero-waste city in Abu Dhabi. Named Masdar City, which means “the source,” the 1,483-acre project will include commercial and manufacturing space dedicated to developing ecofriendly products, housing, a university, and the headquarters for Future Energy Company, which is spearheading the initiative.
Although the desert might seem an unlikely location for such a large sustainable undertaking, Masdar will tread lightly on the landscape by harnessing solar power and relying on construction features that resist high temperatures, including extra shading and slab cooling. Its design is rooted in the Arabic tradition of walled cities—but Masdar’s stone-and-mud walls will be covered in photovoltaic panels capable of generating 130 megawatts. Along the site’s northern edge, the walls will be more permeable to let in breezes. Electricity will also come from photovoltaic cells integrated into rooftops and a 20-megawatt wind farm. The city will get its water from a solar-powered desalination plant. ”
