The reality is that with as weak as the local Republican Party is very few elected Democrats are challenged. So, it's not normal, in most other places there is a stronger second party and independents that will at least attempt to challenge an incumbent. Most of the county officials are running unopposed... It’s rare for a Democrat to challenge an incumbent Democrat and the Republican Party put no one up against her. On a more serious note - not being a toledo political insider in any way - Why doesn't anybody run against Bates? Serious question. How does somebody get that entrenched in such an important post?
