Baltimore Sun gets it wrong on Brian Wilson…He’s not leaving…updated or is he?

04 Apr 2008

This just in via email from a media contact from Andy Stuart of WSPD:

There have been some inaccurate announcements on some websites stating that Brian is leaving WSPD to take a full-time job in Baltimore. In fact, he will be doing fill-in work for this Baltimore station and will remain as the PD/PM Drive host on WSPD. Any questions by other media, clients or listeners can be directed to me until Brian returns from vacation on Monday.

Here’s what the earlier linked Baltimore Sun article stated:

Brian Wilson (pictured at left), a longtime fixture on Baltimore radio, is coming back to Charm City. Beginning Wednesday, April 9, Wilson will taken over the noon-3 p.m. slot on WHFS-FM (105.7). Ed Norris, who is rapidly becoming the main man on the city’s afternoon radio dials, will move to the 3 p.m.-6 p.m. time slot.

From 1984 to 1988, Wilson was one half of the popular Brian and O’Brien Show on what was the WBSB-FM, better known as B-104. With co-host Don O’Brien, Wilson headed one of Baltimore’s most popular radio programs. Later, he briefly had a show on WBSB’s successor, WOCT-FM.

For much of the past two decades, Wilson has been better known for his Libertarian political views than his deejay work. He had been a frequent fill-in on WBAL-AM (1090). He is the author of two books, A Media Guide for Market-Liberal Organizations and The Little Black Book on Whitewater.

Bringing Wilson back to Baltimore allows Norris, whose show earned top ratings in its time slot last year, to slide into the more popular afternoon drive-time slot.

So…Brian’s not leaving according to this and it appears the original story as reported from the Sun was incorrect, hence this clarification/correction.

UPDATE: Directly from the FM Talk 105.7:

Brian Wilson is back in Baltimore, hon! The familiar voice you heard in the car on the way to school is working his magic from 12 PM – 3 PM on FM Talk 105.7.

You remember Brian from the ultra-successful B-104, but he’s known across the country as a talk-radio host in cities such as New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Houston and Washington, DC. As morning drive host at the Big Apple’s WABC, he assisted the station with its transition from music to talk. And as one half of the highly successful Z-Morning Zoo at Z-100, Wilson opened at Radio City Music Hall for two weeks of sold out performances for world-famous entertainers Seigfried and Roy.

That doesn’t sound like a temporary fill in and if he’s going to be doing the show while still in Toledo? He’s not really back “in Baltimore”…Funny they don’t even mention Toledo at all. Though this could said to be true:

Brian is a graduate of Louisiana State University, and began his career in Baton Rouge. He and his broadcast journalist-wife Cassie and their five-year old Golden Retriever, Beanie live at an unlisted address, well out of gun-range of Baltimore City streets.

Living out here is out gun range of Baltimore City streets…

If you look at the Baltimore Sun article, it says “… is coming back to Charm City’s airwaves.” There never was a mention of him leaving Toledo. It’s probably the same type of thing that Rush Limbaugh does, doing his show from Florida and not New York.

The airwaves was added as an edit, the original wording is listed above in the blockquote – I emailed Chris and forwarded the info I was given from WSPD to provide clarification.

If it’s a temporary fill in starting April 9th and Brian’s scheduled to be back from vacation Monday then he’s going to be doing both shows from Toledo. Which would mean some type of a remote will be done which is not totally strange – Denny does it from Atlanta but that’s not the way it was worded.

    Oh darn.

Per the WHFS website Wilson is doing 12-3p fulltime.

Of course this could be via ISDN. But that’s quite a workload to be on 12-3, then 3-6 on WSPD.

Not much time left to devote to being PD. And, wouldn’t he be competing against CC stations in Baltimore?

That’s why methinks he IS leaving.

Can’t blame Brian for taking a better opportunity when it came along…. I really never figured that he’d stay in a small market like Toledo for long. I’m sure he’ll be doing the show from here, after all, he’s in the same position as the rest of us. He’d like to leave for a better opportunity, but he can’t sell his house! It’s not like our local leaders are doing much of anything to reduce tax burdens. That alone would bring new jobs into the area. Instead, we’re ahead of the country enjoying the recession…

There’s one thing they teach ya in Radio Broadcast School, amongst the learning of what “carts” are and what a “board” is for to have evolved into “360″ machines and digital downloads for songs, and that is to RENT.

After looking at the link, it appears that Brian is on board as part of their full time lineup. Toledo radio just got better.!
