Toledo Public School Board faces marathon interview session…
I can’t claim to understand why they are going against past practice, which was to weed out some of the applicants, but the Toledo Public School Board announced last night that they would be interviewing all 14 candidates.
The last time, ten applicants applied and only five moved on to the actual interview process.
Willie S. Oliver applied the last time and did not make the cut into the interview process, there is a bit more information on the 14 here and TPSinfo has the resumes and cover letters of all 14 online. Troy Neff has been interviewing the candidates, the list of who’s been interviewed so far and the links to the podcasts are on his website.
I think the estimate that this would take 3 and a half hours would end up being a miracle, then the additional time for the Board to go into executive session and make the decision. They could be “burning the midnight oil” at the Administration building on March 5th. What will also make this interesting is what the Lucas County Democratic Party will do as far as endorsement/recommendation, will they select the candidate that many have raised serious issues concerning a conflict of interest? Will they select the previously endorsed Democrat? Will they pick the candidate recommended by former Board member Robert Torres? Will they decide to co-endorse/recommend? No matter who they pick, will that have any impact on the School Board’s decision? That we’ll have to wait until March 5th to discover…
I believe that the board could find a more productive way to spend all this time – like putting together Board goals. Something they say they have been doing for going on two years.
Sure, it appears to be a democratic process, but you know there are some that applied that don’t have a chance because this board is not going to pick them. Why put them through it and why put the community through it?
If it were not before a levy, they would not be playing this charade!
If you want to see the resumes of the candidates, you can find them at TPSINFO.COM.
February 27th, 2008 at 4:39 pmSteven, I did link the links for the resumes in the body of the post.
I’m not sure if it has much to do with the levy, especially since they are meeting after the election will take place. Since the decision took place in Executive Session we really don’t have details as far as who wanted it to be the 14 as opposed to what was done in the past.
February 27th, 2008 at 5:05 pmLisa – I think it has to do with appearances – public relations. They want to display that they believe in listening to those who have applied so earnestly. As well as to imply they would listen to all of us. I’m being the skeptic – I’ve seen too much style and little substance.
Missed the link – what can I say? My eye sight ain’t what it used to be.
February 27th, 2008 at 5:14 pmDouble linking increases the chance anyone else who missed it will see it.
I just didn’t want you to think I wouldn’t include the information, I appreciated being able to view all of the resumes.
February 27th, 2008 at 5:18 pmI think that the TPS board going the extra mile to interview all the applicants is great. Everyone will get a shot to present their case. What more could you ask for?
February 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm“Everyone will get a shot to present their case” That is the most ridiculous thing I have seen on here. Particullarly when only “certain” people will be considered regardless of their presentation!
February 27th, 2008 at 9:31 pmIt sounds like a “dog and pony” show to me.
February 28th, 2008 at 5:53 amActually, I would prefer that they be required to take and pass the OAT’s, along with enduring a complete physical and psychological evaluation. And I want their credit histories screened rigorously for any discrepancies. But what am I thinking? They aren’t applying for a real job, they’re just applying to sit on a school board. So, yeah, I’m glad that they are actually willing to sacrifice half a day to interview the entire group of 14 applicants.
