Senator Sherrod Brown wants more funding for food banks…
19 Jan 2008
Today’s Blade reports on a press conference held yesterday by Senator Sherrod Brown, Aid for food banks should be part of package, senator says by Tom Troy. As we’ve pointed out in the past and many of our local media including the Blade has pointed out, our area Food Banks are increasing higher demand and less donations. An additional press release by Senator Brown’s office can be found here.
Kinda makes a person wonder, with all the glad handing about how great the economy is/was why in such a short period of time, we now have calls for expanded funding food banks.
While the politicos who represent us, fritter and worry about re-election year after year and enjoy comfy benefits of office, they go about their daily life’s telling us how great things are, and not to worry we have plans, and then bam, we are hit with the sudden and unforeseen downturn.
People will put up charts and figures of all sorts and show us how the economy is this or that and in the end, as some have pointed out, it is local and personal.
Now, we can take heart that a Senator has proposed an increase in aid, and then the cat calls will come that we do not need to spend more on entitlements while at the same time we pour billions and billions into invasions and wars and the total costs from them, is still unknown.
With an election for President coming up, it will be interesting to read the “plans” submitted to turn around the economy.
But are there any plans that will mesh with the reality of the present, job growth is not keeping pace with job loss, the types of jobs being created are not of the same caliber of those lost.
Can we expect more calls for less spending on “social” programs and more on military aid and arms sales to combatants around the globe and spending on conflicts, while we cannot resolve the conflicts at home.
