Issue of race and the Democratic Primary…
In a Cleveland Plain Dealer article entitled, Race colors Democratic primaries two Ohio voters are asked their opinion on the topic of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Barack Obama campaign and the Hillary Clinton campaign. The race of the two voters is stated to be part of the reasoning for their take on the situation:
In a recent interview on Fox News, Clinton took issue with Obama comparing himself to President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” she said.
Her comments drew the ire of some Obama supporters who viewed the comment as a sly racial attack, suggesting that an articulate black activist can’t accomplish what a white president can. From that point on, the race talk roared. Both Geoffrion and Hawkins are undecided Cleveland-area voters. They agree that race shouldn’t be an issue in politics. And they also agree that one candidate crossed the line by tossing the race card on the table.
But they disagree over which candidate.
It’s an interesting article, and it raises a point that we have discussed here in the past though I think it can also transcend the issue of race:
Sharon E. Milligan, an associate professor in the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, said every voter make political choices based on unique life experiences.
“Even when blacks and whites share the same goals, they often have very different experiences from living in this country, so we all tend to see things differently,” Milligan said. “If we see things through a black reality, then it’s hard to understand how someone might interpret the same set of facts or events through a white reality.”
I do believe our real life experiences have a bearing on how we see things, race probably does play a part in that as well as economic background, educational background and other real life experiences.
The Clinton’s are race-baiters and a disgrace. They lie and distort and only care about their dynasty. They are scum of the earth.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:01 pmAnd the Bushes are paragons of virtue who care nothing about their dynasty??
January 21st, 2008 at 5:53 pmno bush or clinton dynasty please….
January 21st, 2008 at 5:58 pmI can live with that.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:32 pmRace and racism will be an issue throughout these campaigns. Black reality? White reality? How about just plain old “reality” reality?
Whoever wins the election seems hell bent on screwing us all for our own good.
Thats the reality.
January 22nd, 2008 at 6:54 amOr there could be the “female reality”, the “male reality” the “young reality”, etc…
We all bring our own personal experiences into decisions when it comes to who we elect. Is race as much of a factor as the other ones? That I’m not sure about.
