Blade: Sobczak embraces leadership role in Toledo

21 Jan 2008

With the huge amount of focus that’s being placed on how Councilman Mark Sobczak became Council President I couldn’t help wondering why in the article today Sobczak embraces leadership role in Toledo; critics say council president aligned too closely with mayor this never came up from 2006 WTOL:

TOLEDO — A Republican is now the new president of Toledo City Council. Democrats have the majority on council, but after a head-to-head matchup between Democrat Wilma Brown and Republican Rob Ludeman, it was Ludeman who got the job. It took four rounds of voting.

Reaction from some Democrats has been strong. New council member Mark Sobczak and councilman Bob McCloskey, both Democrats, voted for Ludeman and helped put him in the president’s seat.

Or more recently when Councilman Michael Ashford was elected Council President, in August 2007:

The vote was 7 to 4 in favor of Mr. Ashford, with Democrat Mark Sobczak voting for Mr. Ludeman, along with the three Republicans who were present. Republican Betty Shultz was absent.

No matter how you feel about those votes, these did have an impact on the current relationship between Mark Sobczak and other City Council members and the history behind some of this does affect the present.
