This week’s Truth: these are not ordinary times for the local Dems

04 Oct 2007

In this week’s Sojourner’s Truth, the title of this post is a phrase penned in “This Strikes Us that caught my eye. It’s a recommend summary of what transpired at the Lucas County Democratic Headquarters last week. The Blade had a quote from Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken, “Six months ago, I wouldn’t have been in this building, would not have been invited”; the Truth provides more of it:

“We’ve come a long way,” said Gerken. “Six months ago, I wouldn’t have been in this building, would not have been invited. I want to thank [Chairman] Ron [Rothenbuhler] for his leadership. I’m not happy with the Catlin thing. I’m sure some here are not happy with the Ashford thing … but we get to disagree, vote, and we’re done. It’s democracy.”

There was also quite a bit of discussion as to who would be the new Executive Director of the Lucas County Democratic party, that topic seems to have avoided all media attention and appears to have been done given this:

“When he wins, then what?” asked newly-appointed Executive Director Yvonne Harper. “We still have egg on our face.”

Also in the Truth, Fletcher Word has an interview with School Board Candidate Lisa Sobecki where you can discover “Why has she chosen to open herself up to the anticipated enhanced scrutiny?”.

There are several more noteworthy articles as well as a report on the groundbreaking for the Arena in this week’s Sojourner’s Truth.

I’m really confused by the Truth coverage of the school board election.

Jack Ford hasn’t shown his face – the last thing I read he actually said about the school board election was that he was not running. But he is. And he’s getting as much ink or more than anyone else. What is the deal with that?

Chris Myers and Cheryl Catlin have both published well thought out platforms. I haven’t heard anything from any other candidate – so Ford thinks he’ll win b/c his name is familiar to voters.

I just don’t think we can afford this right now. The current seated city government is not getting the job done. The economy is not recovering in Toledo and residents are still leaving. I have just come to the conclusion that if Toledo is to make a comeback it isn’t going to happen with my generation. Too many politics and not enough workers. So that leaves the next generation – who are now making their way through our schools.

We need a turn around in our public school system and we need it now. This is not the time for this political posturing b.s. We need school board members who actually have a clue how to get our school system turned around.

Kate, Ford is getting ink in relation to this story because his name was brought up for endorsement. It would be really difficult to write about what happened at the Lucas County Democratic Headquarters without writing about him.

The Blade is another topic but it’s going to be difficult for them to promote a candidate who is basically acting like a non-candidate.

Sobecki has been out there too and she hasn’t gotten the coverage from the Blade either when it’s come to some of her recent press conferences. Chris and Cheryl have done a great job in getting the information on their plans out there on the net, especially Cheryl.
Charter schools do not have to meet standards and we need to set the playing field correctly, then the proof will come out and you can actually compare,” says Sobecki.
I was under the impression that charter schools do have to meet the same State standards as public schools.

Members of the administration and some on the council would and do dispute this observation.

I know they would neighbor. We are discussing a recent comment by the mayor and I’ve posted some statistics on swampbubbles.com.

I don’t want to repost here and hijack the thread.

Lisa Renee, one of the most confusing points is that Cheryl did get the endorsement and was not interviewed when the other candidates were.

    LisaRenee Says:

Kate, from what I understand, Cheryl screened for the Democratic Party endorsement when Lisa, Richard & Harold Mosley did. Cheryl was perhaps not re-interviewed but did talk to party representatives, same with Harold Mosley and provided them with documentation. Ted Jobe could have been interviewed since he was not interviewed the last time. Jack Ford was not interviewed nor from what I have been told did he submit any type of documentation asking for the endorsement.

    Steven Flagg Says:

The LCDP did re-screen Mosely, Catlin and Jobe but not Ford because he did submit information nor appear.

    Yes, we are.

the turmoil in the democratic party provides a window of opportunity that candidates like Ronnell Traynum has benefited from. btw. the Traynum Campaign has an official website now at http://www.traynumforcouncil.com

    thanks
