The decision…be a “good Democrat” or a “good Mom”
Last night was the meet and greet Ron Rothenbuhler, event at the Democratic Pub which was a chance for people to speak to the new chair of the Lucas County Democratic Party and:
“This is the first of many monthly events to celebrate our current and former Democratic Party Chairs. We look forward to an enthusiastic crowd of good Democrats – elected officials, candidates, dedicated volunteers and other good citizens,” says (Mickey) Finn.
It was also the Open House for my youngest daughter at Byrnedale Junior High last night, so a decision had to be made which came first, politics or family…I really enjoyed my first opportunity to meet Ron Rothenbuhler…
Yes, I’m joking! I went to the Open House of course, which was from an organizational standpoint a much better ran event than the scheduling day experience. I already knew where all of Aubrey’s classes were located since she and I had walked her schedule out the day we picked hers up but it did give me a chance to briefly meet her teachers. It seemed as if there were quite a few parents there, of the teachers she had the honor’s classes appeared to have full attendance of parents/children present and the non-honors classes were around 5 or 6 parents. In looking at the sign in sheets for the other hours, that appeared to be about what the teachers we visited experienced for their other hours.
From a diversity standpoint? All of her teachers are white, only one is a male and the majority of her teachers have been teaching quite some time, a few over 20 years. Not all of them stated how long they had been at Byrnedale but it appeared a few were fairly new to Byrnedale. I’m not broaching the diversity issue as a criticism, per se but it is something that I believe should be pointed out and the topic of diversity in TPS from a teaching standpoint has been discussed in other venues. From an experience level, I see the years of teaching experience to be a plus and it does seem from the limited discussion had with some of the teachers that some appear to be willing to try new methods of learning, such as stressing the importance of reading in all of the core classes including Life Science, or the math teacher sharing he was not really happy with the new math system at first but that now he was really starting to embrace the Connected Mathematics 2 system.
I am sorry I missed a chance to see one of my favorite elected officials last night at the Democratic Club since I heard Rep. Peter Ujvagi was there as well as I could have met former Mayor John McHugh and his daughter, Molly McHugh Branyan who will be running for District 2 against D.Michael Collins in November. I was told they were among those who attended last night but, there’s always next time.
Glad that the open house went well! I’m sure you will get another chance to attend a political event, soon!
September 18th, 2007 at 12:37 pmI’m sure I will too Robin, though there was a family betting pool going on as to which event I’d end up attending.

September 18th, 2007 at 12:42 pmLisa, forget about it, just go to Golden Corral on Alexis Road because you’ll find plenty of politicians either eating together or fighting with each other.
September 18th, 2007 at 12:46 pmI’ve never been to the Golden Corral…Thought that sounds really appealing with the way you describe it? That I might pass permanently on for the rest of my life and still feel okay.

September 18th, 2007 at 12:51 pmWell, I for one am glad you missed the Democratic PowWow and came to Byrnedale instead. It was good to see you! I think the event last night was well received. And I’m sure next year’s Open House and Schedule Pick-Up will be better. The parents and staff are working toward a more positive momentum swing to the year after the unfortunate beginning. Hope to see you at the Bowsher Homecoming Parade! And, look, I even made time to blog today!
September 18th, 2007 at 12:52 pmYeah for Chris! (smile)
It was a really nice Open House, and it appeared the Good Humor truck was a huge hit with not just the kids but some of the parents. The decision to do the shuttle buses from Bowsher seemed to eliminate any parking issues, though for me I had that aspect easy. Miguel dropped us off then came back to pick us up when it was over.

September 18th, 2007 at 12:55 pmLOL, Lisa. You made my jaw drop till I clicked through and discovered you were joking.
September 18th, 2007 at 4:05 pmYes, that’s the “bad” Democrat in me, I just couldn’t resist…

September 18th, 2007 at 4:08 pmI’m pretty sure my daughter shares math class with yours. I was at Byrnedale too!
September 19th, 2007 at 3:23 amWhat is this? Everyone’s child goes to Byrnedale Middle School?
September 19th, 2007 at 8:07 amI did and, now mine does.
September 19th, 2007 at 8:43 amI went to Bowsher Junior High, Byrnedale wasn’t built yet. That’s cool that our daughters are in the same math class, he seems like a pretty decent teacher.

September 19th, 2007 at 8:56 amI was the guy with the white shirt sitting by the door. I thought it was you but, wasn’t sure if I should mention it. The guy does seem like a pretty decent teacher. Way better than the nutcase I had when I went to Byrndale. The treat of the night for me was seeing my old metal shop teacher from Bowsher, who’s son goes to Byrnedale now. Mr Fink, is still one cool dude!
September 19th, 2007 at 10:29 amNext time say Hi! My kids have grown accustomed to it and I wouldn’t have minded at all. I’ve been out of school for so long not many of my teachers are still teaching though Aubrey had one of my teacher’s from Beverly as a substitute last year.
