Karen Shanahan gets that earned media…
If you ever needed proof that the way for a candidate to get media coverage was to come up with an idea that was different and creative? Today’s Blade article by Joshua Boak, Toledo city council candidate tries martial arts to marshal votes should demonstrate that, along with Joshua showing off some of those creative writing skills:
Retirees got a chance yesterday to do something many voters have been thinking about for years — they hit a politician.
Karen Shanahan, a Democrat running for the Toledo City Council District 2 seat, hosted a self-defense demonstration for about 30 people at the Margaret L. Hunt Senior Center in South Toledo.
The Democrat eschewed the politician’s staid pant suit for a white kung fu outfit.
I saw a TV report about this and have to admit I was surprised anyone showed up. Thirty attendees ain’t too shabby, unless they all were her relatives — and getting the positive press was a plus. I made fun of this idea originally, but it looks like I was wrong. Gotta chalk up a point for Karen.
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:03 pmI love it, LOVE it. Thanks for posting.
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:29 pmHopefully it’s enough to make voters forget that she threw her Karate-kicking self in front of John Irish and defended him over Strippergate. Hiyah!
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:58 pmthat she threw her Karate-kicking self in front of John Irish and defended him over Strippergate.
Hush! We’re not supposed to remember things like that.
August 3rd, 2007 at 3:20 pmAnd we’ll just pretend the Hildo video never happened.
August 3rd, 2007 at 4:33 pmIf I were on the campaign staff I would be concerned about those karate photos getting used against her. Taken out of context they could look quite silly.
August 3rd, 2007 at 5:17 pmLOL, Mike. Maybe they’ll become “Caption This” contests.
August 3rd, 2007 at 6:31 pmI agree, Mike. We all have visual memories of other campaigns that have twisted photos against the candidate. I wonder if she is running her own campaign without an advisory team.
August 4th, 2007 at 8:42 amThey might be used against her some day, if she ever develops mayoral ambitions
