Blog it! Toledo and a most excellent Toledo Free Press…

04 Aug 2007

I always enjoy reading the Toledo Free Press, I did before I was given the fantastic opportunity to write a weekly column for them and even on the few weeks I have not submitted a column. There has not been one issue yet that I have not enjoyed, but this week it is an especially excellent edition. In the Opinion Section alone you’ll find a moment of drive in movie nostalgia by Micheal Miller, a thought provoking piece by Karl Rundgren on The Nazi Challenge, a guest piece by Maggie Thurber on Tax Levies among the offerings. Then the cover story on problems with the cat population, one as a former Save-A-Pet foster home I can attest has been a long standing one in this community.

In the sports section, a great article about Wiffleball which next to badminton, I admit having a fondness for. Then in Food Chain there is a great article on produce and the Detroit Produce Terminal where many of the items we eat come from. There is also the business section, the apartment listing section and more, including the Exclusively Online section with this week’s Blog it! Toledo focusing on Toledo MySpace sites that even include Roller Derby!

Either online or in print, when you read this week’s edition of the Toledo Free Press you’ll find something that is of interest to you.

    I haven’t received my free press in over a month. I wonder why they stopped distributing it in my area.

    I’d suggest emailing or calling them, that way if it is some type of a delivery error they’d know about it.

    I love the Free press. I was especially happy to see Maggie’s article on the levies and so on. great newspapers are born and grow over time. The Free Press is evolving and growing..which is very exciting for the Paper as well as the rest of us.

    My wife and I dabbled in the distribution and verification of delivery of this paper and the accompanying ads. At that time the operation was a bit of a mess. We decided it wasn’t worth all the mess to stay in it. It’s a great paper but the distribution is hit or miss. Sometimes they have had to use work crews to get it delivered if there isn’t a regular carrier. So, yes, you should call them. Either call the Free Press or call TDS and let them know. They certainly don’t want to be paying someone for supposedly delivering something that you are not getting.

    Chad, Lisa;

    I greatly appreciate the kind words and constant support from both of you. This is a great experiment and the greatest ride of my life, and I believe we are offering the area a positive and fair news source. We have a long way to go, but we’re working hard, and we’ve made some great friends, like you two, along the way.

    Craig;

    No disagreement; the initial delivery system was messy. This kind of massive delivery effort had not been attempted before, and we made mistakes. It is much better, but it still helps us to know when specific addresses have problems. You can contact TDS or me personally at mmiller@toledofreepress.com.

    I just wish they still delivered the paper where I live. We get the Kroger and Meijer ads but don’t get the Free Press. I understand that they can’t deliver them everywhere so I pick one up in Toledo at some point in the week. But delivery west of Whitehouse would be nice

    As for cat population control, how about putting existing strays on the pill? I’m serious. In Hollywood, they are beginning to do this with their population of pigeons http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20032364/

    I think that would make a good bandaid, at least.

    I’m in support of the creation of a cat warden, although my experience with feral cats tells me that cats will be very difficult to track down as they are much smaller and faster than the wild dogs that might have roamed Toledo.

    I hope this goes somewhere!

    With the recent release of the foreclosures in the area, “Foreclosure actions rocketed 51 percent in metro Toledo in the first six months of 2007 compared to the same period last year, according to newly released data.” http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070807/BUSINESS06/70807001

    It makes me wonder how do we keep going to the well of levies when the area is in a decline.

    The levies for some do not add up to much on a yearly basis but if one is struggling then the yearly increases are an extra burden.
