Johnny Hildo misses some melanin
As I headed over to be entertained by the almost weekly verbal antics of the Toledo City paper’s mystery writer or writers, Johnny Hildo, the title of the column this week gave a pretty good hint as to where he/she/they were headed, The color gap in T-Town politics. Rumor has it that those who make up the Hildo have their pulse on what’s happening in local politics, so I was surprised that some names were missed.
At first you might want to give those who make up the Hildo the benefit of the doubt on candidates who have not yet formally announced, like Cheryl Catlin who is expected to run for one of the two open Toledo Public School Board seats, and maybe thinking that the Hildo cooperative felt Harold Mosley was not a young minority professional (though he did mention Jack and Larry) might explain away not mentioning the fact that Mosley has formally announced his intention to run for school board. That doesn’t explain how Richard Brown was not included as one of the candidates for Toledo Public School board, that would be kind of hard to miss, especially since he is one of the two Democrats that was endorsed and whoever wrote the Hildo column on May 23rd 2007 did seem to remember Richard Brown’s existence and it also should also be noted listed Cheryl Catlin as well.
Over in District Two, Mario Campos has announced his intention to run, another candidate that was missed? When you take these candidates into consideration that kind of throws the whole main gist out of Hildo’s column…Imagine that…
While I won’t disagree with the Hildo contingency that our elected officials/candidates are not as diverse as our community is, not mentioning everyone that is running doesn’t help those that are running get their names out there or portray an accurate picture on the color gap in T-Town politics…
Race, gender, age, physical ability or disability, sexual preference, height, weight, political party —- whatever!!!!!
June 19th, 2007 at 7:47 pmHildo seems to be a discriminatory person of a different kind. I hope I am mistaken.
People are people.
I agree that should not be the primary focus and while we don’t know who Hildo is, whoever he/she/they are probably should have read some of the other columns written before supposedly by them, that way they would have at least stood a shot of not missing quite so many candidates.

June 19th, 2007 at 7:53 pmI wonder what people would think if I divulged the information I have on the pseudonym “Hildo.”
June 20th, 2007 at 9:29 amUnfortunately, I have promised to keep my information confidential.
Darn, darn, darn!
There have been several names mentioned involved in “the Hildo” but after this last article? Can’t be one of them, unless they were on vacation. Realistically once those names are revealed the column would be over and I’m really surprised it’s been kept as much of a secret as it has been. I expect eventually a big huge reveal column when the main person decides to leave town or something…

June 20th, 2007 at 9:43 amIt’s amazing what a little detective work and persistence will reveal. Having a network of people throughout the community is an invaluable aid.
June 20th, 2007 at 9:57 amRoland Hansen. I was going to post this to you the LAST time you teased us with knowing Hildo’s identity. If you’re not going to spill it, why do you keep bringing it up ? Frankly, it feels like chest-thumping. Please, put up or shut-up

Okay. But WHAT did I really say?

June 21st, 2007 at 4:44 pmI will shut up. I apologize. Please forgive me.
By the way, since you brought the concept of divulging information and full disclosure, I have a couple or three or more comments. I use my real name in full. My name is linked to my blog. My blog has a link to my home page. Both my blog and my home page have a link to my resume.
Turnabout is fair play. Will you kindly provide your full name and resume?
Roland, I think what was meant was if you are going to hint that you know who it is that that particular commenter would like to know the details. I’ve heard names too but I don’t think it would be right of me to post since I don’t really know so I classify my knowledge as to who makes up the Hildo’s as still at the rumor stage.
That is a bit different than someone deciding to not post their name or resume. You and I do fully disclose who we are but there are lots of people out there that don’t want to.
June 21st, 2007 at 5:03 pmWell. LisaRenee, with all due respect, I think jrs should (to use her/his own words) put up or shut-up.
To be completely honest and forthright, I don’t have much respect for anonymous posters, just as I have no respect for political bashing nonvoters or folks who are critical of candidates but are unwilling to put themselves forth as a candidate.
June 21st, 2007 at 5:21 pmSome people may criticize me for that, but it is my perspective to which I am entitled. And, if she/he/they do not like it —- too bad, so sad.
Mr. Hansen: Janet R. Spehar here. Twice elected School Board President. BS in both Economics and Political Science. Mother of two wonderful children. Hobbies include Toledo politics and public service. Consider myself an optimistic cynic. Need more ? Not sure that we know that much about YOU at this point…
Now, on to other things. I never mentioned full disclosure. I simply pointed out that you have let us know several times now that you know who Hildo is but will NOT divulge. So what is your point ? We get it, you know & won’t tell. We get it.
June 21st, 2007 at 5:28 pmWhat does it matter who the person is?
June 21st, 2007 at 6:33 pmNot sure that we know that much about YOU at this point…
You must be new around here. Take a look at my resume.
Very briefly: Elected three times (each of four-year terms) to Lucas County Board of Education, now known as Lucas County Educational Service Center Governing Board. B.A. Psychology, M.P.A. (Master of Public Administration), Retired Public Administrator and adjunct college instructor, former President of the Northwest Ohio Chapter American Society for Public Administration, and blah, blah, blah.
I take it you are the same Janet R. Spehar of Dearborn Heights Board Of Education District Seven in Wayne County Michigan.
neighborhood concerns: The issue here for me is credibility.
And, as an aside, in regards to my previous comment regarding anonymous posters, I need to correct myself.
Hooda_Thunkit and a very few others for whom I feel an affinity are the very, very rare exceptions to my general thoughts about anonymity. Hooda_Thunkit and these other few exceptions have earned my respect and admiration, and IMHO are credible.
Ms. Spehar: Thank you very much for the information. Best wishes to you. You walk the walk as well as talk the talk. I respect that. My hat is off to you.
Now, I am out of here.
June 21st, 2007 at 7:05 pmI should have been more clear, the person I was referring to is; Hildo
June 21st, 2007 at 9:01 pmJanet, I hope you realize that you did not have to identify who you are, I understand not everyone wants to comment under their name for various reasons. It’s the same reason while I require an email address it remains private.
NC, I think it is a) idle curiosity since most people wonder who “poison pen” type writers over all and b) because some of the rumors have hinted that one of those who is Hildo is an elected official as well as people who are well connected politically. Hence more interest since speculation on this is whoever is helping with the column would not make some political people in this town happy if they were revealed given some of what has been written.
Then of course c) if the person (persons) was named would they write some of the things they’ve written? Probably not…

Who is to know.
It seems more of a way to keep a readership tuned into to see what is written by some mystery person.
