31 May 2007
This in via email as a media release:
City Councilman Frank Szollosi To Release Marketing Analysis on Advertiser and Taxpayer Supported Municipal Wi-Fi Networks
WHEN: Thursday, May 31st, 10:30am
WHERE: 21st Floor, City Council Suite Conference Room, Gov’t Center
WHY: The Finkbeiner Administration is considering a $2.16 million City of Toledo commitment to a California-based venture capital technology start-up for “free” municipal wireless interest services.
I’ll update as soon as there is more information…
Well, recent history seems to indicate that the major beneficiary of the WiFi Networks would be the city.
By now, most other potential users have already solved their access problems, or have found some other way to cope, so there will likely no thundering herds of subscribers just waiting for access.
Now, if the city is smart….
Guess I just killed that train of thought
Well, as I was saying, the public network would benefit the non-public safety governmental interests, while the public safety network would benefit the Public Safety community.
There’s still that nagging question of why a mesh (bucket brigade) network when there is fiber with plenty of capacity, pretty much everywhere.
And regardless of my personal distaste for all things “Block,” the CableSystem is the prime entity to participate and partner with, because, with their fiber for backhaul, we would get a vibrant, responsive, high capacity/bandwidth, low/no latency network, that mesh networks can only dream of providing.
But hey, do you want a powdered sugar of cinnamon doughnut hole with my opinion?
Either way the opinion is still free
