This week’s Conklin Company, Ben Konop back from China, Smoking and more

22 Apr 2007

This morning Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop was on Conklin and Company talking about his trip to China. There is also an article in the Toledo Blade written by Ben on economic opportunities possible with China.

While on with Lee Conklin, Ben stated similiar thoughts to what he expressed in the Toledo Blade, Chinese have serious environmental issues we could promote to them alternative energy here in this region that would be one way to benefit. Another would be becoming a transportation hub for China’s products. In China government has the ability to invest in other governments. Toledo needs to decide if they want to compete or to isolate themselves.

Media is controlled by the government, they wanted Ben to have a 30 minute video about their city on our local tv. Thought Josh worked for Ben not for media. A great article by Joshua Boak summing up his China experience.

Pam Butler from the Wood County Department of Health was on, talking about the smoking ban and how it goes into affect on May 3rd.

Take three with Lee Conklin, Fletcher Word and Tom Troy; first discussion was on the showing of the “manifesto” by the Virginia Tech killer and the media questions as to how coverage was handled. Fletcher stated it’s not an issue for his weekly paper since they are not under the same pressure as electronic or daily media. “The more you get the more you want” as far as public curiousity. Tom felt that there was an effort to focus on the victims and the causes by the media.

They discussed Gonzales briefly, Fletcher felt that he was a “walking dead man”, Tom felt there had not been any illegal activity identified yet. They both seem to think he will resign soon.

Nothing local was discussed…

It is happening now in Adrian. My last contract assignment was for a packing, supply chain management company and the management is actively courting the Chinese businesses.
