Jack Ford compares Carty to Opal Covey…
Well, it appears our former Mayor, Jack Ford is a bit “sparky” in his weekly column, My View:
Mayor Carty Finkbeiner’s off the wall or, should we say, “off the bridge” idea of placing eating tables on the MLK Bridge during renovations was amusing. Be careful, Carty, or you will end up on another card in trivial pursuit along with your infamous airport suggestion for the deaf.
Actually, the mayor’s suggestion for eating arrangements on the King bridge fits in with the vision of one of his competitors from the last election. I think it was Opal Covey who suggested that a ferris wheel be placed in downtown Toledo.
Finkbeiner’s idea might work if you provide each patron with a strap on seat welded to the floor of the bridge. That way, Carty, when the bridge opens, the patrons would not slide into the river but rather be taken for one helluva ride up into the air just as in Opal’s vision. Great minds think alike, it seems.
Jack of course has much more to say in what might be named “What would Jack Do”, WWJD rather than “My View”.
There’s also an interesting letter to the editor written by Peter Kepler who states:
let me assure you, the Erie Street Market cannot make a profit, ever.
I also suggest not missing Fletcher Word’s This Strikes Us, where some interesting labeling happens:
April 4th, 2007 at 2:34 pm“The fiscal conservatives, Michael Ashford, Mike Craig, Ellen Grachek, Joe McNamara and Frank Szollosi…”
So can they come up with some answers to head off the impending crisis if the city heads in the same direction or will we hear at the next budget deadline, that they were not given enough information and that makes me wonder about all the meetings that were held.
April 4th, 2007 at 2:47 pmIn my view, Jackster the Jokester is no longer credible in his view. He is not worth my time of day. What a JackFo!
April 4th, 2007 at 3:16 pmOh come on, he’s the first one I have read to point out that the bridge Carty wants to have cafe tables on is a DRAWBRIDGE. It certainly didn’t cross my mine.
April 4th, 2007 at 3:52 pmDave true, but I’d really love to believe the Mayor meant the part of the bridge that didn’t go up…

April 4th, 2007 at 3:57 pmI’ve heard a lot of discussions and negative comments about the bridge being a drawbridge…perhaps I just run/read in different circles???
As for the column, Jack is extremely adept at the political gamesmanship – and I can appreciate that. What better way to dismiss Carty than to compare him to Opal, a woman whom many think has a lot of ‘quirky’ ideas – a woman that many do not take seriously? Great move, Jack, but had you used such wit during your campaign, who knows?
April 4th, 2007 at 4:16 pmThe taxes in Toledo are too high. I proposed to the Lucas County Republican party that a petition be circulated to put the following on the ballot:
“Resolved that if a tax levy is rejected by the voters that the organization not be allowed to put any substantially similar levy on the ballot for a time period of at least one year”
The levy system around here is rigged towards higher taxes. If a levy goes down, it often appears again a few months later. If a levy passes, the taxpapers are stuck with the taxes for years and years and years, they can’t ask for a revote a few months later. The zoo is the most recent case. Whatever you think of the meritz of the Zoo levy it was voted down. Then they got a doover, now we have higher taxes for 10 years! This system puts a huge bias in the system towards higher taxes!
April 4th, 2007 at 4:27 pmI find Jacks column brilliant at times.
Too bad that his wit and savvy were kepy under a bushel for so long.
As for gamesmanship, he coulda been a contender.
Instead we got the jester with the three cornered hat. . .
