Snowplow and mailboxes don’t mix…but Toledo takes responsibility
A friend sent me the link to this newstory that was featured on NBC24 and stated she was glad to hear that the City of Toledo would take responsibility for mailboxes that were accidently destroyed by snowplows. Unfortunately unless something has changed if this happens outside of Toledo, such as in Lucas County you are responsible for replacing the mailbox yourself. She had that happen to her in the past and I remember very well seeing mailboxes that were destroyed by snowplows when we lived outside of Toledo. While the snowplow drivers do have a difficult job and I’m sure they do their best to avoid taking out mailboxes, it’s also not the fault of the homeowner since they have to have the boxes accessible to mail delivery trucks.
I’ll never forget in ‘05 when I was out playing in the snow with the kids and I watched a snow plow take out my mail box. He knew what he did, he even stopped and laughed as I was waving my hands to flag him down. I do understand that they have a job to do, but what I don’t understand is why they’re not responsible for replacing the mailboxes they knock down. On my way home from my youngest childs basketball game yesterday I seen several mailboxes that were either completely destroyed or “rigged” so that they could still be used. One was tied with rope to hold it together, another was shattered and laying in the snow bank next to the stand that formerly held it. By law they have to be put in a certain place, so if they’re where they are legally supposed to be and they’re destroyed by the county and no fault of our own, why shouldn’t the county have to replace them, ESPECIALLY when we personally witness it happen?

That deserves as much recognition as can be thrown at it.
