Old West End Ice Cream Social

Ice Cream FlavorsOld West End Ice Cream Social – Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the World’s Best-Selling Ice Cream Scoop!

From 2 – 6 pm on Saturday, September 11th (raindate: Sunday, Sept. 12th), the Old West End Ice Cream Social will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Zeroll Ice Cream scoop, which was invented in 1935 in a garage in the Old West End. The Zeroll was the first modern ice cream scoop, and had no moving parts. Cast of aluminum, it is hollow and a liquid sealed inside uses the heat of your hand to help the scoop cut through ice cream. While many have tried, no one has been able to improve on the design. The Zeroll Company (now located in Florida) continues to produce what has become the most popular ice cream scoop in the world.

The event will be held at 2410 Robinwood Avenue (2 blocks north of Bancroft Street), where the Zeroll Company got its start, and will feature free Toft’s ice cream, free popcorn, swing, rockabilly, blues and bluegrass music, as well as children’s activities. There will be a display of ice cream scoops from the 1880s to the 1920s, each with a different mechanical mechanism, showing just how revolutionary the Zeroll scoop’s design was. Zeroll will also be displaying some early Zeroll prototypes and other material from their archives.

In summary, not only will it be fun to celebrate the birthday of a famous utilitarian object that was created right here in the Old West End, but it’ll be a great excuse to eat lots of ice cream! Great architecture, great people, cool history, live music, and free ice cream! What more can you ask for?
